Here is another version not often seen. Its a brown colored blank with cranberry/garnet and white thread work. And it fishes well as a 4/5 wt. It's pictured in the 1961 St Croix catalog I posted a couple months back.

I had a chance a while back to purchase one of these right here on the forum but I wasn't going after them at the time except for the shorter ones. I finally found one :P

I will post a couple other versions in the next week or so.

Beautiful, Russ. Thanks for showing it. Thanks also for sharing your knowledge of these Imperials and early St. Croix. That's one of the great things about this hobby: There's always some new(often old) intriguing rod, or reel to be discovered around the next bend and others that share the enthusiasm!

Those are fine vintage rods and that one looks to be in excellent shape.

Jeff I should have purchased yours when I had the chance ;)

Cheers,

Russ

This model which is a lighter brown blank (than the 1st model pictured above) is normally what most of us see here on the forum.

Vince Cummings also used this St Croix blank for the FL-368 Ultimate I fly rod. Maybe some remember my post 3 years ago about my Vince Cumming ebay find? I sent the Bob Patterson 4/24/75 marked rod back. Stay away from that rod!!
Here it is below.
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=45772&p=183181&hilit=vince+cummings+ultimate+1#p183181

Herters as many already know here also used this St Croix blank I will focus on a couple others when time permits.

Very hard to find in original correctly marked tube and boy did i pay well for this one but happy to have it.

Russ, i'm a fan of these rods too. the one you sent me has a light brown blank with brown thread -- like the one above, but with a couple differences. for one, the ferrules are not gold. they are a dark maroon color; the butt cap is plain light brown, and the rear sliding band is plain gold -- not stamped with st. croix name.

wondering if the dark ferrules, butt cap and unstamped sliding band are original? thoughts?

Pat yes I do believe that rod to be original. Interesting that one of the hardware pieces was not marked? With St Croix making these for about twenty years I'm sure we will see some other versions and one of the main reasons I'm posting all models I find. I have seen both brown and black butt caps on the St Croix as well. I have another one I still need to post pictures of that has a brown butt cap, alumina stripper, and no metal ferrules. Catalog lists it as a NEW Imperial Ferrule-s series. :P

Whoops forgot to mention I'm working on pictures now and will post asap.

Russ

Here are a few pictures of mine. It's a bit rough as you can see in the photos, but man, oh man, what a sweet rod. I can see why Cummings liked this blank so much. It is marked as a 6 weight but I like mine with a Cortland Peach DT5. Russ, and others, what line do you prefer fishing on this rod?

This is the caramel colored translucent blank with gold sliding bands (sans St. Croix stamp), same mini- grip. The butt cap is plain brown plastic. Notice the ferrules are a dark wine color.

Here is yet another St Croix Imperial from the 1979 Catalog. Listed in the catalog as the NEW FERRULE-S TUBULAR 2900 Series. This one is the 6'8" St Croix Imperial 2902 UL. 6wt.

As you can see in the pictures its almost identical to the St Croix Imperial 7090 XXL but NO metal ferrules and its a staggered blank. These are also listed in the 1983 catalog.

Listed also in the 1983 catalog are the NEW 4300 series Imperial Graphite models.

The 1984 St Croix dealer catalog I have lists this Imperial Graphite XL 4302 3/4wt 7' model below. I wanted to include this model here on the forum only because the same cork grip continued right into the graphite explosion. I believe St Croix used this same cork grip for over 25 years. I hope its ok that I posted it :eek

I finally found the 6 footer! It’s a nice one. 1970’s version. St Croix Imperial 7090 XXL 6’ 5wt.

Hey Jeff! It’s one of the earlier Fenwick World Class 1 fly reels. Nice little reels.

Beauty of a rod. I've always admired them but have never gotten my hands on one.

Yes that world class reel looks great and appears to be a nice match on that St Croix fly rod.

Reading about these St Croix rods made me get mine out to compare. Brown glass, brown/white wraps, rings with St Croix stamped on each, gold ferrules. Most unusual note about this rod is instead of saying “rated 6 weight line” on the butt section, it reads “rated 6 lb wgt line”. We’re spinning rods made from this blank?

I don’t collect the spinning rods but see them often. They had a whole line of the St Croix Imperial rods using these blanks. Spinning rods and Bait casting rods and many other fly rod versions.

I saw one of these today on the auction site, and wanted to know more about this series from St. Croix; I have a couple of the older 6' 8" 7090 with metal ferrules, and like them a lot. I knew where to look for information, and am grateful to all who have contributed to this thread. --Tom (in Miami)
