Over the holidays, I built up an 8'0" 6wt. 5pc. Larry Kenney blank. I was excited about this build as I've tried to get Larry to sell me a blank in the past without success. But I finally scored one, and even better, a 5pc. version. Larry described this one as a "moderate 6wt." I did a small amount of lawn casting (the lake is frozen) with an Airflo 6wt. WF line, and it is really smooth.

I wrapped the rod with YLI silk chestnut thread, which turned darker than I expected. But the dark brown wraps ended up looking pretty good on the lighter latte colored blank. Snake brand universal guides, REC black pearl Recoil stripper, 7" full wells grip, Lemke bronzed uplocking seat with gunstock walnut insert, and an Abel TR 3 to top things off.

Let me know what you think.

Looks good Colt! Love that reel seat in bronze and the walnut insert! I have a thing for five piece rods as well.

Well done, Colt! Looks very nice! I look forward to build my blank sometime in the near future ... Not a 5pc though, which would have been neat ...

I find that five piece rods are often beautiful casters, more so than a 4 piece rod. Seems like not having a ferrule in the middle of the blank enhances the flow of energy resulting in a smoother casting blank.

Nice thread and reel seat wood colors for the blank.

I bet it balances beautifully with the 7" grip and TR3.

Very nice build, great length and line weight and I bet that 5pc will come in handy.

Awesome rod, probably my favorite length and line weight, and Kenney 5 piece to boot.

Thanks guys. I emailed Larry yesterday and he told me that this 6wt. was built on a slower tapered mandrel with a resulting smaller diameter butt section which gives it a more "moderate" action as compared to his normal 8'3" 6wt. offering. I'm anxious to cast this one on the water.

Colt, that is really a nice looking build on a Kenney 5pc. blank. I really like the dark wraps along with the reelseat hardware. It looks really classy. Great Job! I do have one question though ... being a 5 pc rod, what is the weight on this beauty? Just kinda curious 8o If you don't mind me asking

are those wraps dark brown, or black? whatever they are, they look darn nice on that blank.

not too many five-piece rods out there that I know of, so this is kind of a rarity, I guess?

would be interesting if someone did a compare of the same length kenney in 3, 4, and 5 pc configs.

thanks for sharing --- cool build!

Mikee,

I am not sure what it weighs, I'll try to weigh it and get back with you.

Criscip,

Thanks man. The wraps are dark brown (Chestnut). I'm not very good at photography. They look really dark though, almost black ... especially with the black ferrules, unless you are in good lighting. I was actually trying to do something similar to the brown wraps that Larry uses, but the chestnut colored thread turned darker than I expected when finished. But I am pretty happy with the results. I'll try to get a better picture of the wraps.

Be interesting to see if it comes in weighing around 3.4oz.
Nylon Pro-Wrap RNS-A 755 in size A gives a pretty true Chestnut colour with just a varnish coating.

Great work. I tend to prefer clean builds like that.
