... have more feathers and fur in their closet than they’re likely to use in a lifetime, but still always seem to be missing that one thing you need?

Yep. I've had more than I could use since the 80's. Doesn't mean I don't need more....

Yes. I try to be creative on substitutions rather than buying one more material. I almost never have everything I need.

Need... Want... I can easily fish for decades with the flies tied from my current material cache. Yet, I am still contemplating a run up to the fly shop so that I can get some more.

Just bought some moose. Not with any particular pattern in mind just in case i need it.Another material i feel the need for is wood chuck.Again no pressing need,i just dont have any.I still laugh every time i run across the 1000 mustad 2/0 popper hooks i bought for 20 bucks last year.to date i have used exactly 1.

Just please don't donate your big box to your local fly tying charity.

I have been sorting through a couple of bins for material that has been donated to our Project Healing Waters chapter. There is only so much craft fur and colored turkey quills that you can use. This bin had all that oddball material that you accumulate over the years. It had some nice goat dubbing and hare mask but most of it was specialized/useless material. It made me realize how much crud I have in my own tying boxes.

A few years ago I tied four orange shade Light Cahill duns. They set in my fly box until fishing them this past Fall, when I used them to catch quite a few trout. Wanting to restock, I looked for the dubbing I’d likely used for the flies. I hadn’t documented the dubbing used and couldn’t find a match in my dubbing drawer. Then I remembered donating about 25 excess dubbing packs a local TU chapter. Through the member I’d given the bag to I attempted a search before giving up and blending a substitute.

I was lucky, my fly fishing mentor was just leaving the hobby when I was getting into it and when he could no longer fly fish he gave me all his tying supplies for which filled my entire extra room. Yet I still keep finding things to buy to add to my supplies.

I have lots of materials but find my most effective flies are the easy to tie flies that require the least materials. I think I could catch as many fish as I do if I was limited to just 20 materials.

Anybody that doesn't have more stuff than they will ever use is obviously a newbie. I did throw out some things I wish I'd kept. A couple of times, but every once in a while I get the urge to organize and clean up.

What a silly question, the real issue here is "Does anyone here NOT have more feathers and fur … ?", and if not, Why Not ?

Having lots of extra tying materials let’s one be experimental and come up with new variations. Fly tying recipes are just the starting point...

Last night I sat down and started looking for some feather that I thought I needed and realized that I have 2 large totes full of tying material...keep in mind that I just started tying last year and that to date I have tied maybe 50 flys...

I am going to have to spend more time at the desk tying...
