Since I haven't found the time to swing any flies yet this fall, I'm compensating by staying up waaaaay too late tying the flies I want to swing when I do get the time...

Playing with composite loops. Time consuming, but really fun and what a cool effect. Tonight's attempt was the first to come out presentable:

I even liked it enough to use my last pair of JC eyes!

wow! that looks great. bet it has some awesome movement in the water! is that a steelhead fly? looks like it would work in the salt too.

Love it! The blend of feather eye and fiber is pretty cool.

Thanks guys! yeah, it's a pretty cool technique - it makes these sparkly, translucent halos around the hook. I'll probably try an intruder type tonight.

I'm tying for steelhead, but I'm sure it would work elsewhere (of course, it hasnt worked for steelhead yet either...). Basically it's just a big fancy soft hackle variation and what won't eat a soft hackle?

Update: I was very happy with this fly. So naturally I lost it to a log within 5min of tying it on...

Brockton-

You might be overthinking the whole swinging for steelhead game. I'm across the lake from Toronto, but I do very well swinging simple flies on a simple setup. 90 percent of the time I use flies like the pic below using a single hand 7 weight rod with a wf7f line. Just cast and let it swing. In most situations, you really do not need a switch or 2 handed rod or sink tip or shooting head. I went through that whole phase and came back around full circle to a 7 weight rod with wf7f line.

I'm not being critical, I just know I spent a lot of time and money trying to find a magic setup to swing for fish when what I already had works just as good.

Norvisor,

Those are some really nice looking hunks of bunny fur. Is the body crosscut and palmered or a dubbing loop?
