So how did I do

At the beach on vacation for my birthday, been raining most of the day. My wife got me a fly tying kit for a present so I decided to try it out. Figured a clouser was a good start as its supposed to be easy to tie and I can fish it the rest of the week. This is white buck tail and flash on a mustad 3407 #1.

Never tied anything before, any criticism welcome. Any suggestions on getting the "nose" wraps more uniform?Image

Looks good for a fir one. My best advice (and I'm really not being snarky): do about a dozen more! I think you'll find that a lot of things like cleaning up the nose wraps will sort themselves out, as long as you're thinking critically about what your doing along the way.

That'll catch fish anywhere.

Those wraps are fine fish-wise. Give em a coat of Sally Hansen's and they'll be more durable. As is, the fish aren't going to care. They will get neater as you keep tying, but I wouldn't worry about them at all.

Skunked, I put a coat of liquid nails over the figure 8 wraps holding my eyes on and again over the nose wraps. About to go get a few flies wet so we will see how I did

I'm a beginner at fly tying, too. One thing that i find helpful is watching several different YouTube videos for each pattern and trying different methods of doing the same thing. Sometimes you find hidden tips that work better for you, for whatever reason. I've learned a lot from tightlinevideo and intheriffle.

Keep at it. It becomes a soothing ritual for me. Okay, move the eyes forward a bit. The nose is too long. Brockton is correct - tie a dozen more. Then go fishing. :)

Got skunked this morning surf fishing but that's not too unusual.

Tied a few more after lunch, good tips and pointers from everyone. This is fun!

I think the position of the eyes in relation to the hook is better on your first attempt (close to the midpoint of the hook shank) than on the 2d (closer to the eye). Of course, that's a personal preference but one more commonly preferred from what I've seen. Both probably fish the same. Jim

Agreed. I'd push the eyes back closer to the first version, but maybe not that far back. I tie a ton of clousers and for me the sweet spot is roughly 1/3 of the hookshank back from the hookeye, plus a tiny bit more. This gives the jigging action i like from clousers on the strip. Don't toss that one, though, fish it--it will catch.

Trust me the only place I'm tossing it will be into the Atlantic Ocean tomorrow morning.

Messing around some more, I've tied a few more today. Tried this one with some olive maribou in between the white buck tail.

Might be awesome, might suck, who cares I'm having fun!Image

The more time you spend at the vise, the more confident you'll become. Like Brockton said, thinking critically is crucial to making progress. Those flies look good and I'd fish the heck out of them. Good luck and have fun!

Your posts reflect your enthusiasm, great to see you enjoying the birthday present. Keep on tying now, because when that baby comes you may wind up to tired to tie for a while!

You did well on your first attempt. That fly will definitely catch fish. The proprtions look good and the crystal flash extends out past the buck tail. I use clousers a lot on the warmwater streams around here. I catch smallmouth, largemouth and even bluegills with them.
I have ton of bucktails at home so for fun I'll tie them in outrageous colors. One of the outrageous colors that works well for me is chartreuse and pink. Don't ask me why but the fish just like it.

Looks way better that my first flies. Catching a fish on a fly you tied is a great thrill and boost of satisfaction. Warning - fly tying does not save you money but gives a good cover story to the hunny anyway ;) I have maybe $500 in materials and tools if I had to buy it all new again. That takes up a box about double the size of an average shoe box... but being able to tie when I cannot fish, and coming up with new variants or new patterns gives me great joy. And there is something cathartic about tying streamers for me. Big meaty contraptions.

Cool seeing fly caught flounder!
