The Spring Miller is an effective cross-over patter from warm to cold water. It takes most all species of fish the "look up". From Blue Gills year around, to Trout in the tail-outs in the evening and Smallmouth most everywhere you find them. I twitch-retrieve on still water and let it swing into the tail-out of a pool on rivers and streams then twitch-retrieve for several feet.

Recipe

Hook: #12 Caddis Emerger
Thread: Black
Abdomen: Brown Thin Razor Foam
Wing: Bleached Calf Elk
Legs: Brown-barred Centipede Legs

Good one, I like patterns that tend to keep the hook eye free from any potential exposure to head cement.

That's a great tie. I may add that one to my bluegill arsenal. I've been using stealth bombers, but this is a better looking alternative.

first fly i ever saw someone tie was similar only they used squirrel tail instead of elk.i think i still have that slotted straw type tool for making those bullet head style flies.the razor foam body is a great idea.bluegills just trash flies with those little mouths.green sunfish and rockbass are worse yet

Yessir. I've done well over the yeas with a rabbit dubbed body and woodchuck wing as well.

I definitely have to try that for the gills.
