I haven't tried Whiting Brahmas's yet but sure do like silver badger hen capes for some soft hackle patterns. Very nice!

Those look wonderful. Thanks for the idea! Never thought to try brahma hen for soft hackles.

You could fish those in so many ways - traditional wet fly swing, greased leader, and they'd do well to pass for chironomids too. Sweet flies!

Thanks for the kind words. I can see another cape in the future. And of course they work too. If you look in the snoot of this little bitty troutfish you can see that size 20 sticking out.

jgentile, amazing neatly tyied flies. I like them very much.
I have a Whiting Brahma Hen Saddle, feathers looks really different from yours. My cape feathers are more similar to Partridge feathers, but with very thin stem and "greasy" fibers.
I decided to try tying some soft hackles duns: #18 hook, antron yarn shuck, UNI tying thread abdomen and hare thorax:

Tiny, but it sure is a pretty fish. Nice softies by the way.

@ Blue Charm, not sure what your saddle looks like compared to mine. I used the feathers right at the neck and just below it.

@ Softhackle, That is probably the smallest trout I have ever caught. Best guess is 3" MAX. I was lucky to get a quick photo then unleash the forceps/hemos to set it free to hopefully grow.

Thank you jgentile. I'm sending you pics of my Brahma Hen saddle, I'll be happy to have your kind suggestions how to use it.

Hi Blue Charm,

Your Brahma Hen looks markedly different from mine. Check out this link as it looks just like the cape I purchased. https://www.featheremporium.com/Fly-Tying-Feathers/whiting-hen-capes.html

At first blush from looking at the images of your feathers, they appear to be larger and it looks as though you have used more feathers, particularly the smaller ones at the top. If you look at the picture in the link I posted, I used the little feathers all the way at the top of the neck.

Joe

jgentile. I learned from your link cape is really different from saddle.
I tried some flies with my saddle and cdc, "faux Devaux" style as I call them:Image

That makes sense, cape vs. saddle. I like the look of those Tenkara style ties. I think I'll have to tie up a few for myself!!!

Nice work ! I've been relying on soft hackles increasingly - they seem to work in a lot of different water types for me .

I tyied more flies with Brahma Hen saddle: hook TMC 103BL #15, abdomen UNI Camel 8/0 thread covered with Hends Body Quill, thorax is natural gray squirrel by Wapsi, hackles Brahma Hen and cdc.

Bushog, it's an interesting material. I only tied a few flies since now, but I like it when I need bright "buggy" bodies.
It's sometimes frustrating to use the Multicolour one because color changes a lot along the thread; the standard one is easier to tie but less realistic. Lighter colours need to use underbody in my opinion.
