A squid fly of my own design.

The articulated shank glows in the dark. (The target fish I use this fly for are active at night and low light times.)

Cool ! May I ask a dumb question -- how did you achieve the glow in the dark aspect ?

Before I begin the tying of any materials, I spray the articulated shank with luminous paint (available in the paint section at the hardware store). It's a pretty rough coat, giving the "pen" of the squid an "organic" look.

And thank you too jhuskey.

Some hair wing Atlantic salmon flies before I work my way into fully dressed feather wings. Hopefully I'll get to put these to use some day in the Northeast. It's a goal that now been added to the list.

Rusty rat with grey squirrel wing and a green rat with silver fox wing. Both on a size 6.

I have the hook shank wrapped in foam and underneath the head is a small piece of foam.
I have a picture of it but it won't upload.
I did that so I can fish it on a poly leader or sink tip and the fly will float above the weeds

Here's what I've got cooking. I tied up some pheasant tail nymphs, but I have a tendency to make up some frankenflies based on what's left in my tossed off material before I throw it out (stuff in the white box). I get a kick out of thinking out what I can create with what I've got in there. I had not purchased any material in 15 years or so and only been tying a handful of flies each year. This winter's output has been something like 120 flies - a lot for me, basically thanks to inspiration from here, so really, thanks to all the talent and sharing here, it's really gotten me back into enjoying tying.

At any rate, this winter I splurged and upgraded my vise, bought a couple of saddles (wow, they are much nicer now than what I had) and picked up a partridge skin (holy cow, really a pleasure to tie with). I usually fish dries and nymphs, and rarely wets, but decided to give them more fishing time this year. So the frankenflies in this batch are wets, a dark and a light pattern, using cast off pheasant, peacock and partridge, with some silver or gold ribbing, depending on body color. These are all #16 and #18.

And the desk, with the cast off material.

I have read that soft hackle wets are great for stream trout. I am no great tyer by any means. With arthritis, I can no longer tie like could several years ago. Anyway, this is my attempt at the soft hackle. So what do you guys think? Are they any good? I posted them on another forum also, but wanted to get your take on them, too.

The fish are not as fussy as the fisherman. Should work fine.

I agree jeffsod. Those flies will catch fish. It's the fish, not the fisherman, who decides what looks good!

If it's a traditional soft hackle appearance you're going for, then try using fewer turns of hackle. Is that mallard flank or wood duck flank you used for hackle? Partridge, grouse, starling, and hen feathers are my favorites.

Yes, wood duck flank. The rooster necks (partial, not the whole neck) I have, the hackle is too stiff and is more for dry flies. I did happen to find a few dark saddle hackle feathers in my box that have been working ok. I think I will tie a few with fewer turns of the hackle like you suggest.

I like 'em, oldsaltnfla. Yup, it's the fishermen that go for the real pretty ones. Nothing that won't work here. I do usually save the wood duck for wings on Catskill-type dries, sometimes I am real stingy with it there, too as it's so darn expensive. Partridge and hen for me on hackle as well. All nice and buggy-looking.

Hey JoeGlass. I have an adequate supply of wood duck and blue wing teal feathers. Those ducks, I shot myself a few years back. Have some quail feathers too that I use wherever grouse feathers are called for as they are pretty close to each other. Glad you like my flies. That gives me some confidence.

Rasta variant with pretty much zero actual materials of the original (except for maybe the black and brown sharpie markings)
