Hi all,

I have a client wanting me to make him a rod, but he wants a matte finish to it. Unfortunately CTS don't do matte finishes on their QuartzGlass blanks (which is what he is after), so he has asked if I could possibly "sand it down". A quick search on the internet has revealed a number of good posts about doing this to graphite blanks, but nothing on glass.

Has anyone had experience doing this? This is just to reduce the shine off the blank - not to try to strip the color completely away, so I am picking a very fine grit sandpaper with water should do the trick??

As someone with a lot of experience in automotive finishes I would lean toward doing this with a 3m scotchpad, (they are available in different grits, green or tan would be what I would try first, red is very aggressive) I think this would increase your chances of getting a uniform finish without breaking through the finish. Do this with some Dawn dishwashing liquid, just a couple of drops and water and it should take no time at all to remove the gloss. Test under the grip area to insure the results are to your liking.

I've done it on Graphite. I think I ended up using 600 grit sandpaper. I might have done a light pass with 320 first. The scotchbrite pads didn't work for me.

I personally wouldn't do it on a colored CTS blank. The color is in the finish, so you could end up scratching through it. And then who knows what will happen to the colored finish over time.

Given the CTS finish is not particularly hard I would go with 1500 wet sandpaper. That will just take the shine off.

Thanks all for the advice. I ended up also querying this with CTS - and they offered to do a one-off matte finish in the colour I was after. Awesome service!
