First off, I am not a rod builder so easy is what I am after. ;)

I have 1/3 of the butt section an old glass rod that I use both in my hand and on a home built line winder to hold a reel when I am winding on a new line, cleaning, reversing etc. The cork grip is about shot so I was thinking I could easily slip on a replacement grip made of EVA after removing the dried out cork.

It’s not a deal breaker but I didn’t have any luck finding any preformed fly rod grips in EVA, just straight grips, which I guess could be shaped by someone with the tools and experience which isn’t me.

Does anyone have a source for preformed EVA grips with a smallish ID?

While I don’t know for sure what the diameter of the blank is under the cork, it measures .420” just before it. If I can’t find something pre-formed, I can deal with a straight grip for what I am using it for.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can offer!!

Hello
Go to your local hardware store and purchase some foam pipe isolation glue it right over the grip.
Should cost you about 2 bucks.

Anything but straight but that will do if that's all I can find, however unless I am missing something I don't see anything but cork on your site.

Thanks for the idea!! I'll keep it in mind if I can't find what I am after.

Okay, just checking. I have a friend who builds a lot of spin rods and thought he might have something, but turns out he only has what you have been able to find. Any reason you don't want to put a new cork grip on? The process is pretty straight forward.

I'm sorry I can't help on the original question, but personally, I'd be getting some of this heat shrink and just covering the old grip. For less than $20 and about 10 minutes of your time, you'll have what feels like a new rod. If you want to change the shape of your grip, wrap the cork with electrical tape to get a pleasant contour for your own hand shape before applying the heat shrink.

Cheers,
Graeme

Wow, that heat shrink material is the cat's meow for sprucing up worn-out cork. Thanks for the info!

I've seen this stuff in tackle shops lately. Must be quite popular.

Thanks all for the suggestions!!

I like the Mud Hole stuff and might go that route if the grip deteriorates further.

At this point I am considering leaving it alone for the time being and either fabricating something new from an old Eagle Claw Trailmaster rod section or have someone fabricate me what I need from scratch. The line winder I built that I use it with keeps developing so maybe the rod section needs to develop as well.

Rather than start a new thread, what would I expect to pay ballpark for someone to fabricate me a 12" fiberglass rod butt which can be made from scrap, a second or even an old used used rod butt with a straight or shaped grip and ANY screwlock reelseat they got. The only other thing I need is an additional 1" section of the same blank with a stripper guide mounted on it that can be inserted into rod butt section via a spigot.

Any takers? ;)

Heat shrink on a roached cork grip. I wasn't ready to tackle the complete rebuild at the time.
I can always remove and do the cork later. Thumbs up.
