Has anyone built on the new Proof 8'6" 5wt blank? If so, curious as to your impressions. Roy

I got one of the 3 wt blanks a while back. The tip had a bit of a corkscrew. He was quick to send a replacment, but it had the same problem. It also bounced a lot during test casting. Not sure about the 5 wt or latest versions.

The grips that he sells are excellent and cheap.

Ditto on Matt's grips.

Haven't build on that particular blank, but have built on 3 of Matt's other blanks.

Didn't have the same issue as bassackwards, some blanks had a slight curve in sections but nothing overly serious. I've cast the 4wt Havana blank and really enjoyed it, just waiting for some better weather to give the 3wt Amarillo blank a try. Currently building the 7wt Tandoor blank.

Also will vouch for Matt's grips.

I have built a few of the Proof blanks including the glass 5wt. They are nice. For a sub $100 blank I think they are hard to beat. If I can figure out how to post a picture with photo bucket no longer working I'll put it up.

Currently working on a build on that blank. The blank looks really nice to me. Haven't thrown a cast with it yet. Will try to post photos as the build progresses.

Thanks for the responses. For those who built the 5wt, any specific issues with ferrule fit?

On mine, the fit between the middle section and the butt was spot on. The gap between the top and the middle sections was a little bigger but not bad. Could make them both perfect with little effort.

I built the 5wt for a coho trip to Puget Sound. It's a nice blank, and powerful. I fish mine with a Rio OBS 6wt line. It's now my go-to streamer rod, even though it is now 3 inches shorter (car door!!).

well never built on his blanks but i have used two of his grips, a 6.5" torpedo and a 6.5" ritz and both are just fantastic and feel great in hand.

coho on a 5wt seems a bold move ?
I used an 8wt in Alaska for the one time I got to fish silvers, didn't feel overpowered at all.. really would like to get back up there, the coho is a glorious fly rod fish..

This was in the sound, so river current wasn't an issue--nor was keeping the fish away from boulders and the like. Fish were 1-6 pounds or so. The rod handled them fine with an 6wt OBS and 10lb tippet.

I've built two 5 wts, had to do a little work on both of them (ferrules). Nice casting rods though.
