I like to build rods as a small hobby so that means one or two rods a year.

It never fails to give me sticker shock when I order guides and the shipping turns out to be more than the price of the guides. I can ship a rod USPS priority express for less than the price they charge for something so small as 8 or 9 guides.

Anyone know of a brick and mortar store that sell rod building components in North TX?

Anyway just some late afternoon boredom and venting...

I feel your pain. Try it in Australia, where every component is coming from overseas ... :(

The Snake Brand guides bought from the company online were actually very reasonable. Only $16 to send about $100 worth of guides to Perth. A set of spey rod grips costing $35 had $42 in postage added by a different company. :(

Cheers,
Graeme

Ye Olde English Fly Shop, based in FL, has reasonable shipping and quite good prices. They don't have a huge selection though.

eBay is a good bet sometimes, but you're right, it can be tough. I'm planning on using leftover and salvaged guides on my next build for that very reason.

Reason for my post is that I have a set of snake brand black nickel universal missing a size 1 guide. If anyone has one that they would be willing to sell plus a postage stamp, please let me know. I was planning on also getting a set of the REC titanium alloy recoil guides so shipping for a single snake brand guide is painful.

If someone has the REC recoil guides and want snake brand black nickel universal guides then maybe work something out through PM.

Anglers workshop has since sold but they used to just charge a buck or two, not the listed shipping charges, if you called them and only needed a guide or two. Maybe give them a call.

Proof Fly Fishing just lowered their flat rate shipping price. They have the lowest shipping I know of. Plus Matt is extremely helpful!

Barlow's in Richardson. Just off North Central Expressway east side just south of Arapaho. Its mostly a catalog fulfillment center now but still a brick and mortar walk-in store. And its not north Texas but if ever in Houston, check out Fishing Tackle Unlimited. 3 locations. Both have gotten lots of my business over the years.
