Finally finished up my first Build. It's a 6 ft 3 wt built on a Mountain Brook Blank with primarily proof components. A huge thank you needs to go out to Jared Taylor of J. Taylor Custom rods (Check out his wood burned grips and feather work, it's incredible) for holding my hand and teaching me far more than my first class ever did. Also thank you for the input of this board. It's a nice little rod, definitely a more modern glass. Only thing that would make it better would be if I had sprung for the 3 tand that balanced it well yesterday but alas, I prefer staying married for an extra hundred dollars on a reel. Any constructive criticism is appreciated.

That is a classic looking build. The grip-reelseat combination is neat. And the color combination turned out really well.

You should be proud of that build. Now we need fish pictures to go with it.

Nice. I like the thread color you used on that blank -- great combination. Good job all around!

Thanks carl, another huge thank you needs to go out to matt draft of proof fly fishing. I really wanted a burl but all of his were dark. He fished through what he had and sent me that seat which set the color scheme for the rod. As to the style, even at age 32, I think upward seats are sacrilegious and just plain look bad!

Nice job! It matters little to me if a reel seat is up or down-locking. There are advantages to both, depending on the rod. How does it cast? Balance is very subjective as some folks like a rod to be reel heavy, and some like tip heavy. So long as it works for you over a day of fishing, that's great.

That is a very nice build. The colors work really well together, and the reel seat insert matches the wraps nicely. What did you use to finish the wraps--spar or epoxy?

I think you'll be happy with the Orvis Battenkill. It's a really nice clicker (fully machined!), and a real bargain at that price. It's one of my go-to reels for smaller rods.

I ended up doing epoxy, proof's threadmaster lite. I initially wanted to use 6 coats of spar and keep it old school, but the spar has a slight yellow tint and i wanted the colors to remain true. I literally test wrapped no less than 8 colors before coming to my senses and going with tangerine colorfast. Was going to do lilac trim bands but realized simple is better. The grip is is a rhw i cut the end off and sanded down to get a superfine, I love the look and feel of the cork seal, it really helped with the color.

If that's Matt's new downlocking reel seat, I like it.
