The issue of passing knots is not often an issue with casting, when can knots interfere with guides.
* Bringing in a fish close on a long leader - for example, long and fine trout fishing
* Multi-tip, including Spey lines and streamers - junction may come in on the retrieve or when bringing in a fish
* Shooting Heads

If you are fishing a bamboo rod with silk only, and using fine knots, consider smaller.

Oh yes, I usually keep the same small guide down the top half of the rod. So I also migrated to the concept of a parallel line to the blank and then expand the guide size and let the line drift away as I move to the butt and reel. In my "qualitative" tests, I like this feel and felt it did not harm any performance. I have since applied this to most rods, happily. But I believe this is a tweak, and being a better caster is more important, but it is a good refinement.
