Hi all, new member but been looking at the forum for months.

I've been experimenting with reel seat inserts of late, banksia pods and bamboo skewers at the moment...

next attempt is probably with square skewers. I haven't got a lathe, just a drill and some sandpaper so the hard bit was to make a hole down the centre. This is just held together with 5 minute epoxy so nothing clever.

Here's the banksia pod attempt, made from pods picked up from a tree nearby. No finish on it at this point, just seeing how it looks.

Has anyone tried using cheap titanium rings for sliding bands? My wedding ring seems to hold one side of my reel seat on a rebated insert quite well...

Nope. But have used lengths of copper tubing (usedfor plumbing) and purchased at Ace Hardware. Use a hacksaw, file and Emory paper to smooth. You can also blue it.

Thanks for that- sounds like it'll work if I can find the right diameter then- can you recall the size? About 3/4"?

Yep, 3/4". 1/2" was too small.

A bit more playing about tonight... Maybe with proper cork and more care gluing the skewers this might be an interesting look...

I cannot visualize how you did that but it sure looks good; you are pretty innovative. Who'd ever thought of that for a reel seat!-p-

Ha thanks! Basically I glued a load of skewers that I'd cut short into two equal pieces with the skewers sideways on, cut a hole along the top or each to make the hole for the mandrel, stuck the two halves together and turned it on a drill...

Awesome idea. Makes me think color pencils, done in the same fashion, would make a great insert. I've seen it done in other applications, may have to try it out soon. The whole setup you have there looks great. Thumbs up!

Hey pencils sounds like a plan- the hexagonal ones would fit pretty tightly together I expect... Good idea that, I like it!

So I finally got round to trying pencils and it’s very difficult to avoid carry over of the colours without a lathe I think, still looks quite fun though, maybe good for a kid’s rod.. please excuse the terrible photos.

Yeah, I think it might work if someone good with a lathe had a go- looking at the way people use them to make vases and things, it sounds like the key is to avoid sanding them. With only a drill and sandpaper I’m a bit stuck in that regard! Still, I’m only messing around anyway, I doubt it’ll make it onto a rod.

Next up, stacked leather...

? … Polygamy would provide you with more 'raw material' … ?

You're kidding, right ? My very first thought was 'How'd he do that without getting the epoxy full of bubbles ?' And I'm really surprised 5 minute epoxy sanded a polished so well … really impressive Stuff !

When I first saw the glued Skewers insert I thought they were actually corncob they're so tightly packed.

Honestly there wasn’t much care involved with the epoxy, I guess it was so thin when I rolled the skewers in it that any bubbles disappeared.

So I finally got round to sorting the grips on two proof blanks I’ve had for a while... I think the plywood is kinda fun, certainly a cheap insert material anywayImageImageImageImage

Are you still doing all of this without a lathe? I feel like we should all chip in and buy you one just to see what you come up with then!
