Thanks, that's a crummy picture isn't it? If it were better lighting you'd see it's not overwrapped. As for thread, I used Gudebrod nylon #206 garnet, Belding Corticelli 4425 -- an orange turned cognac under spar, and tipping is Hemingway Paragon #618 claret.

Andy, good to see you here. My homemade rod turner a couple years ago bit the dust. So, no turner. :(
I go really easy on the varnish, so there is no dripping or sagging. But, putting on so little means having to coat and recoat-- 7 or 8, or more, thin coats on a rod. It takes forever. Good thing I'm not on a deadline! :lol

I had the guides wrapped, trimmed with a couple accent colors, with 4 coats of varnish on, but the aesthetics were... wrong. The all cork grip and seat, and simple cap and band reel seat hardware wanted an uncomplicated look to tie it all together. So, backtrack I did. Peeled off everything and redid it. I'm much happier with this less-is-more look.
Almost there!

Trying something new to me out here. I can't write inscriptions neatly to save my life, so I'm turning to technology. Going to try waterslide decal paper first. It should also allow me to customize my labels whenever I want.

First one fresh off the printer

Going to let the ink dry for a few hours, then hit with a couple light coats of clear. I'll let you know how it turns out.

And I think it turned out pretty good in the end. Got to see how well a couple coat of clear hide the edges of the decal, but it's supposed to be thinner than vinyl decals.

Looks great. I might have to try decals. It beats my handwriting.

Looks good. I struggle with inscriptions too, so am interested in your solution.

Testor's has a product called "Decal Set." I wonder if that would be a good overcoat prior to finish.

I'm using the Testor's paper, I was able to pick up a refill pack of clear decal paper from a local hobby shop. It's an odd size (8 1/2" x 5 1/2"), but good for a test. I design my labels in AutoCAD as it's what I'm familiar with, but you could use Word, any Adobe program, or even MS Paint if you wanted to. You print them out on an inkjet printer (there is laser printer paper available as well), and let it dry for a few hours. Then give it a couple light sprayed clear coat to seal the ink to the paper. I had an issue with this on my first try, as some of the clear coat seeped between the paper and the decal and prevented it from separating. I've corrected that by cutting the decal oversize and trimming down after sealing. Once the clear coat is dry it's just like the decals you used to put on your model planes. Get it wet, slide it into place, and blot off the water. Let it dry overnight and seal with a clear coat.

Thanks! I might give it a try.

Some here will remember longtime forum member John Sisco, just before he passed away I purchased this bamboo rod from him. He had told me that he had run out of time to work on it and wanted to pass this along, I had no idea what he meant but then after he was gone I understood. Pretty sad, I miss talking with him about shooting black powder guns and the beautiful state of Maine. Started working on the Horrock's Ibbotson Prince rod he sold to me, scarfed the tip to add 3 inches of length to the short section. Started wrapping guides this morning.

i remember John Sisco. He was known on the forum as Ratfacedmcdougal. I had the pleasure of getting to know John over the course of four or five years at fiberglass claves in the Northeast and in New England. He was a friend, a fine fisherman, and wing shot! I miss him too. Good luck with your bamboo prince project. John would be thrilled to know it will soon be back on the water.

Well I never did fish with RFMcD, but we communicated a lot through this board and I enjoyed his company at New England 'claves. So now, oldschoolcane, if you are ever coming to Maine--I'm sure you will want to have John's/your rod along with you, send me a PM and we'll see if the three of us can fish some place he liked, like Grand Lake Stream.

Quite a history among this group now, right to restoring rods previously restored by one who went before us.

Finished up my build. I am happy to report that my waterslide decal blended right in without a lot of effort. It's hard to find the edges unless you know where they are.

More pictures on the photos board if anyone is interested.
