Glue up your 14 or so rings let them sit overnight, when the glue is fully set then attach them to your mandrel for turning.
If you wind up with glue drips inside the bore you can always remove them with a reamer.

Andy, are you clamping the rings or applying any sort of pressure with this method? I have always used a cork clamp to avoid getting gaps between rings. I usually coat the threaded clamp rod with wax to keep the glue from sticking.

Hello
Of course you use a simple cork clamping device how else would you glue 14 rings together ?
Wax,Grease,K Y JELLY WHY ????
The Idea is to keep the I.D mating surfaces clean and free of anything that will/can eventually compromise the bond to the blank.
Even if you use wax and then ream your still going to contaminate everything, the I.D. of the grip and the reamer with goo.
Where do you guys come up with this stuff ???
Whats wrong with keeping everything as clean as possible and relaying on tape shims and interference fits when turning.
We are talking about turning cork here not titanium.

That's what I figured, but you didn't mention the need to clamp in your post. Just checking to see if you had something else in mind. I've never had an issue with contamination when using wax. Just helps get the cork off the clamp.

Finished the 5 wt. 8' 6" Proof rod. Lemke L7 from SWRC with a quilled poplar insert was the last step. Thanks Ron and Matt. Plan to fish it Friday. MG-7 for the win.

Moving on to a beater 1953 7' 9" Wonderod 1250. Wraps, cork and seat were pretty bad. Good goldenrod color.Complete strip. Modern guide spacing. Gudebrod silk. Another great seat from Ron. Corn cob. Will be quite the mash up.

Hello
That Wonderod sure will be a much cosmetically improved fishing tool when your finished.
Is there a reason your wrap didn't extend up onto the ferrule ?
That reel seat insert is Very interesting looks like a killer bee hive.

Foraged some freshly fallen birch bark at the family cottage, so I’m trying my hand at some birch and gasket material accents. More to come...

Also, I do all my best rod building with an infant strapped to my chest

after my assistant (see above) and his elder brothers were finally out for the night, I managed to sneak back downstairs to finish laying out the handle, bark and all

Thanks Brockton, does my heart good to see that. Laid a Sister-In-Law to rest this past weekend and having been really enjoying the snuggles of my 2 year-old as we dealt with it.

Dusted off my bench again tonight, looking forward to getting back to some projects.

Planning to turn the cork tonight or tomorrow. Probably need to do that bit by myself, though, as I’ve had a hard time finding a dust mask his size. ;)

All the best to you and your family, Tom - one of these days we should do that Southern Ontario glass get together.

Thanks guys.

Now I really have to stop turning handles and tie on some guides or these things are going to be useless!

I thought I was the only one that did this. However I turn my cork either in the driveway and it's nice to get it all done in the summer so I can keep the dust to a minimum in the cold months.

Was curious if anyone has experimented with precious stone end caps and donut rings?
I recently added an onyx cabochon (not drilled) endcap and an onyx donut at the front of the second handle and butt extentions that insert into my reel seat of my JK Fisher Andy built.
I filled the donut in with rubber to seal it all up.

Came out really sweet. I'll post some pics later

I’d like to see pictures of that - I’ve been thinking about end caps in general lately, but I’m not exactly sure how to go about them.
