I’ve heard there is a huge discrepancy between the advertised and the actual weight of the Taupo (something like 9.9oz vs 7oz). The claimed weight of the 3 3/8” wide spool is 6.2 ounces, the 3 1/8” is 5.7 ounces and the 2 7/8” is 5.3 ounces. Can anyone verify these weights? Or are they nowhere near their actual weights either?

I can only speak to the Taupo in regards to having checked the weight.

The stated weight is 9.9 oz/195 grams, however when you convert 195 grams you get 6.88 oz

When I put mine on a scale it weighs 7.25 oz.

3 3/8 is 7.7 ounces with backing and DT6 line - so stated weight is likely spot on.

They’ve made these significantly lighter than the older narrow spool 3 7/8” Perfects. I had one that weighed almost 10 ounces loaded with backing. I would imagine most people in the market for a reel this size (the Taupo) are planning to use it on a switch or light Spey rod. I doubt 7 ounces is enough to balance such outfits. What the traditional narrow spool is lacking in capacity, the modern Taupo is lacking in weight. I guess one could easily add weight to the Taupo with lead tape or some wraps of T-20 under the backing to help balance a longer rod...I think I’ve just convinced myself I need a Taupo
