I'm not sure why, but I think solid spool reels look classy.

Here are a few that cover all sized waters.

I don't think I've posted photos of these before, but they've been accumulating over the past year.

Is that one of the Herman Voss spools on the Medalist? I hope to find one someday, or that somebody starts machining them again. And you're right that these solid spools look classy!

They do look classy. At minimum, I prefer my reels to have a non-ventilated inner spool plate. Otherwise I've found my backing to become full of grease and oil quite easily through the ventilation holes.

I had an Abel Big Game #2 - awesome looking reel. I sold it because they barely click in either direction, and that bugged me.
Very cool smaller Ross! (I think anyway)

I love solid spools. They look the best. I'm not a fan of these modern reels that are machined to Kingdome come. I'm in love with your medalist solid spool I've been wanting one of those for ages.

For me, this is one where function has to trump form. I prefer ventilated reels because they help the line and backing to dry more quickly.

Vent spools for me, although the solid spool looks cool, because as archfly said it lets the line/backing dry.
For more than forty years I have taken old Jean's advice and just used water as lubricant on my Medalist, they still work fine. He warned about oil deteriorating plastic coated lines and demonstrated holding the reel under the water til bubbles quit prior to fishing and told me to always do this. Said also that oil/grease would cause the brake pad to swell and deteriorate, true or not, I don't know; because I did as he said.

I believe the medalist spool to be a Voss, but I don't know that much about them. I should probably search the forum for more info. I would prefer it in a 1494, but it definitely is a nice spool.

I hadn't thought about the drying issue, but the advantage of the solid spool on the Abel is is it provides a bit more heft for balancing a spey rod. That and the old draw bar/cork disk is about as simple and effective as they come. And for the RR1s, it doesn't really matter. It just looks fantastic. If I wanted a care free reel, I would use a Gunnison.

This may just be my twisted logic, but for a reel used in saltwater, quick drying is not my goal. Salt residue is much harder to wash off after a days fishing in a dry state than a slightly wet/damp film of salt residue. It may make no difference at all, but is how my mind works. I'm glad I was right on the small Ross (RR1).

I too love the clean look of a solid spool. Sharing a pic of my favorite trio—the now discontinued Abel Classic, Switch, and Spey reels.
