Heddon Imperial 125

I was gifted this 125 a couple of months back. It’s in perfect condition no wobble or excess movement anywhere. I think it may have only been used a couple of times. It even came in the reel bag and has vintage line (if there is such a thing). Anyway, I am planning on picking up my first glass rod and would like to be able to use this reel. The family friend that gave it to me would be thrilled to see it used. So my questions are 1. What all do I need to do to get it to where I can use it? 2. Any suggestions on what reel grease to use? 3. Anyone have experience using a 125 on a 3wt?

Thanks!

Although you could use this reel on a 7' 3 wt rod, it's pretty large and heavy and better suited for a longer, heavier rod. Also, if I remember right it's right hand wind only - but I could be wrong about that.

The Heddon 125’s are really nice reels. I use mine with a 6wt line on a Heddon 8 1/2 footer. The reel foot fits perfectly in Heddon reel seats of 40’s and 50’s vintage. Be advised that my reel will not fit the reel seat of any of my other rods well (and I own a few). I would personally not use it on a three weight, but if you do it will at least hold ample amounts of backing.

Strip the old line, take it apart for a good cleaning in luke warm water with a tiny amount of detergent, rinse thouroughly, grease the center post and apply a few drops of oil to the working parts. Presto.

Ps You might need to invest in a screwdriver/ with a straight/flat end to avoid damages. Ds

Thank’s for info. I may just get it cleaned up, re-greased and re-oiled and keep it as a backup to my Crown II.

I see that fly line is just directly wound on there. I've received vintage reels with old line on them as well. I"ve always wondered if old timey fly fishermen didn't use backing to wind on their fly line?

Exactly. They're called hollow ground.

the reel would be a cherry match with these two cherry rods:

I would recommend not trying to take the latch cover off - it's one of the trickier latch plates to reassemble.

Beautiful reel in primo shape! I agree with others that it'll be too much on a 3 wt. Mine balances nicely with my Fenwick 806. BTW might be sacrilege, but I just fish mine LHW at the 1 setting and it offers enough check for my needs. Great reels.
