Saw a cool idea for thread on the antique bicycle board - who owned it?
I don't have any cool inherited reels - my dad grew up grappling catfish on the canal that ran through his family farm.
But I have these two provenance reels:

Jamie Maxtone Graham

Hoagy Carmichael

(if you have old yuku albums, they still support hosting)

Also have a pretty good collection of mint boxed reels c. 1940, that were owned by heroes of WWII - never fished, squirreled away for a generation, then put on the market.

don't think you can honor these guys more than to take them fishing

and maybe somebody with some cool provenance rods can start one on the Collecting rods page

I've none that I know of; but Bulldog, I can really appreciate your reels and the attitude toward fishing them.

I used to have an STH Airweight that was owned by Ted Knott,a bamboo rod builder in southern Ontario who passed away several years ago.He made some very nice bamboo.I probably shouldn't have sold it but there is a lot of reels I shouldn't have let go.I believe Ted knew Hoagy Carmichael quite well.

I used to fish a Hardy Little Gem for which my father had hand-fashioned an aluminum foot (The originals were plastic!). He was from Holland and used it for float fishing for Cutthroat with monofilament on a long, light mooching rod. I used it until it was plum wore out.

also to mention, my best GW ever, which I still own and fish, was owned by Michael Sinclair - I cleaned and rebuilt it for him, then Michael sold it to me for a song.

I like that idea Ron- they're a lot of history in fishing and its gear. I have often wondered what story was behind the gear used. Were there big fish on these rods or whom held them?

have a few heirlooms, mostly spinning gear but do have a lot of flies from different tyers i have met and really treasure them.when i make a good find on a rod or reel i always feel a little sad that a 40 or 50 year old rod or reel never got much use .my casting and spinning gear is pretty tore up from use.

I've accumulated a lot of cool old gear. I would love to hear the stories they could tell.....Alas, most came from ebay, often from an estate sale second party. I thought the journey of a fine old rod and reel would make a good children's book. Or adult book.

I just love this topic. I have bought a reel I sold and bought it again.. and then again.
(so that reel has made 2300 to date)

But it would be neat if we from this forum might include a little card or something....

I have many light trout reels owned by Lefty... all engraved with the tool from back in the day. (none for sale)

see Brian, we need you to list them or give us an example (and photos even better), so we, too, get the thrill of fishing with Lefty karma.

Hey Ron, I have one of the only known examples of Walter Dingley's personally owned reels (with a brief written provenance from his son) which I obtained from Brian, author of the Dingley book.

On another note, I remember when Bob Selb had all those cool reels from Lefty for sale a few years ago at really good prices - I was brain numb not to have bought at least one of them! Nice to see you nabbed a few of them Brian.

Adrien, could you please post a picture of the W. H. Dingley reel? I think I recall seeing a red agate, silent check that Mr. Dingley owned on the Anglers Angst blogspot a couple of years ago, but now it appears that none of the pictures of this beautiful historical reel remain available.
Coincidentally, I just asked this question over on CFR forum as well.

Hi, it's not a red agate example (though I have had several and love them) but a rather straightforward example of a Dingley. Walter's son, the doctor, consigned it directly to Brian and provided the brief provenance. I believe very few are known that Walter can be confirmed to have owned, so it's quite special for that historical context. The reel is in storage 11452 km away from where I am, so photos are unfortunately not a possibility now. If I remember I will try and send you one in 7 weeks or so.

Cheers
Adrien

I have a Trey Combs owned Islander LX 4.0 reel. Not a classic reel yet... but might be some day.

I have a Hardy LRH that I bought from Marty Keane many years ago that he said belonged to the author Harold Blaisdell (The Philosophical Fisherman, among others).

none of my reels has any provenance.. but I do look at the reels I bought from England with all their honorable scars of use, and dream about where they've been..

I don't have any reels with provenance from someone well known and probably wouldn't pay much extra for one either. But I'd pay a lot more if it could be proven my grandfather owned it. I'd surely brag about owning a reel like that!

I do have my dads little skeleton reel, marked only "made in USA",and my wifes'grandfathers' Southbend auto. Both are shelf items only. Also have a Battenkill 3/4 that belonged to my friend and fly fishing mentor, Dan Hudgins. I miss you Danny.
Any other reel I've got is for sale or trade, these three are forever keepers.

good contributions, bad contributions - like too many threads here.
Thanks for offering good contributions.

Knowing where your reels came from adds a personal intrinsic value - family heirlooms being the perfect example. No bragging involved, it's simply an attempt at creating an interesting thread in the dearth of activity on this forum.

Hi Guys, The stories matter..... My friend, now departed, Jim Wolcott dealt a lot of used/classic tackle. I'd visit him and when some reel/ rod/ lure came up, Jim'd say, " Oh, I've got one of those." Then he'd get out of his usual chair and go into the back bedroom and bring out an armload of reels/ rods or whatever, and then tell the stories of how he got it, or what the previous owner said he caught, or maybe how it got broken, or repaired, or how it was made, or whatever. It all mattered to him. It should all matter......

This is a hard to find left hand wind Dingley reel. It was owned by Barn Champion, who was the British canoeing champion in 1939. His wife apparently once stuck a fly in famed fly fisherman and artist Bernard Venables' ear while she was fishing in his vicinity.
The reel came with an original matched spare spool, a very unusual knurled brass spindle insert for the extra spool, and a leather case.

I have a Hardy Golden Prince that belonged to Hugh Falkus.. he was spey fishing in the 50's.
Also, a recent purchase was a CFO owned by Dick Spurr.
The Lefty Kreh odd reels with electric pen signatures. (a Felty, a Predator, a Fin Nor)
and one ATH owned and fished by Stu Apte...

My favorite though.. I have a 50's Pflueger Medalist owned by my grandpa when fly fished.

My Thompson 100 was owned by Ferd Claudio. It goes nicely with my Claudio G805B - 8-0, DT5.
