Does anybody here have any further info or experience with these? I'm VERY interested in these reels, and curious if there is any way to get them straight from Taiwan, not through some EU importer (I'm in the US, that would be a waste of time and probably more expensive than needed).
I already have some experience buying things from Japan directly, so I'm not intimidated by that.

I don't know anything about them, but they look like a CFO/CRI clone.
The Japan connection makes me think they probably work well.

They have the one distributor which is Nico. I believe his prices are fair. If I did not alreadyl have dozens of reels I'd have ordered one already. They sure look nice.

Yeah they look very simple and elegant which is what attracted me to them.
The price doesn't seem unreasonable but sometimes with a little digging you find that "the" distributor isn't the only way, and they are pulling a steep markup.

Nico has pictures of a rod he recently built with a green reel in the pics. They look sweet. If I had nothing better to do, trolling around to find them cheaper would be fine, but who has the time?

The Genesis has been on my wish-list ever since Christian posted it here on one of his builds.

I have not gotten around to awarding myself with one yet, mostly because I like the CRI I use on my 3wt. Might need to get another 3wt.
IMO it is a fair price for a sweet reel.

I saw that same build on his site, which is what got me drooling over it.

I have to ask, what is the CRI reel people keep mentioning?

CRI = Catskill Research Incorporated.
BTW, Nico's asking price is more than fair. If the outer design of the reel reminds me of another reel, it's the Marryat.

Here is a CRI 2200 on another of Christians (chform) builds, a Winston Stalker 7' 4wt. I don't think that particular build was posted on his site, http://finetackle.blogspot.se/?m=1, but Christian posted it on another forum. (Photo by Christian Hörgren.)

CRI was a reel made for Cortland that was so much like a CFO it was sued out of the US.
Still made in Japan.

After asking the question, I found a couple threads on the CRI. There is one on ebay right now, or at least there was last night. They look nice for sure.
I really like the slab sides of the Genesis, and the color options are fun. I will probably wind up getting one.

Thank you all

I definitely love my Approach reel, matching color with my Ijuin Yomogi rod and Oliviero Toscani glasses:

I own that outfit and it is sweet!

On topic, the reels are no frills and quite light. They feel a bit .... "unsubstantial" to me but that's just me.

I think they're nice for the price point and I must say I do like the colors!

You are probably a very nice guy.

“Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched!” I just said Approach reel are reliable ...
Yesterday while retrieving fly line, I noticed the spool of my Genesis reel was running free. The toothed gear can rotate on the arbor of the spool, than clicker doesn't work anymore.Image
I took close up picture of spool: I think the gear was secured on the arbor by the four small punching. Is that right? Not a very reliable solution in my opinion.
Does anybody have experience with such a trouble? Can you please tell me how I can fix the reel?

Thank you very much for help.
Antonio

Well, that's a press fit. Sheer speculation--I was thinking Bulldog might comment--but I think some of the modern penetrant lubes are so good that they work into the joint and facilitate the loosening. It happens on threaded fasteners in firearms, but I'm not sure about press-fits. Anyhow, afterwards I would minimize lube there.

You could: drill and tap a set screw or pin at the joint--probably not necessary.

See if the gear can be gently pried off. If so, clean it all up, add a few strategically placed shims, and press it back in place. Depending how loose it is, epoxy might be used instead.

Or look at the points that have been peened. Take a punch and whack each one a bit more. You might also be able to add a bulge or two closer to the inner surface of the gear, either with a round punch or a straight edge crossed on to the surface of the gear.

This is all based on the appearance that it is press fit. Bulging the hub for a tighter fit is the goal unless flowing an adhesive in the seam will do it.

I know Josh Young who designed this reel. He is a nice fellow, and is working closely with the manufacturer. Josh has received some feedback from me on the construction in the past, and I will give him a heads up about what has happened on your reel, Antonio. If it's due to the press fit, the tolerances aren't tight enough. Bad tolerances has been an issue on reels I have received in the early stages of this model.

Thanks for commenting, chform. If I was right that it is press fit as appears, good enough. Beyond that, smart to await the best suggestions chform has facilitated. If there is an outcome we can learn from, please post it later. That is a sharp reel and I have a pretty good idea you will be back in business with it one way or another, and not necessarily the home remedies I suggested. No sense taking a chance on them now that chform offered some help.
