I've got a Martin MG10 that I like, but I think the drag could be stronger (don't need it to really clamp down, just feel like it's worn down a bit). Any tips to strengthen it? Is it all controlled by the springs?

take the coil spring out and stretch it - a little goes a long way.
Oh yeah, do this in a shoe box.

Simple! Thanks Bulldog.
And I love the shoebox trick - I have a feeling you learned that one the hard way?

In Bulldog's pic above, the pawl is shown in RHW position, which was the more common choice of fly anglers of the time, and the default design and delivery mode of most fly reels. If you are using the reel LHW, another change is to slide the pawl off its retaining post, turn it over, and reinstall it. This will give a slight reduction of winding effort and a slight increase in the range of outgoing resistance.

Many reels have slid through my hands, including my 1505 Young multiplier with spare spool (great reel), but my MM-11 (twin check MG-10) is here to stay. The MG-10 and MM-11 define multiplier.

The older M-68 has the caliper-clicker from the tuna cans, but gets my vote for best-looking fly reel.

If you're trying to balance 9' cane or glass, tough to beat the wedding cake multiplier, M-72
