I was trying to tighten the drag on my 1595 1/2 RC Medalist. It wasn't getting tight so I kept twisting the screw. Then all of a sudden I heard a loud snap. I was like, "Uh oh, not good!". I took off the spool and this is what I saw...

I was turning the dang thing the wrong way :o Any way of tracking down another one? I didn't pay much for it but if I could win a beater reel cheap enough I could just use the spool and the part I need. Would that part be compatible with vintage U.S. reels?

Sweet, thanks for the heads up about that site. Now the looming question: How can I get the spring cam back on the screw? It is stationary when you twist it. Probably simple since you can buy the metal ones to pimp out your medalist, but I've never messed with medalists too much.

See post #8 and post #10 and the link it includes. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=39198&p=134862&hilit=failure+in+normal+use#p134862

Inspect the brake adjustment screw carefully before ordering only the cam. The screw, most likely the threads, may have been damaged in the process of breaking the cam. If in doubt, order both parts.

Order both parts. Might as well get the reel in as good of shape as you can. Bet you never do THAT again. ;)

Update on my 1595 1/2 RC. I ordered the spring cam and brake screw from eReplacement parts.
Image
I pried up the screw retainer, it was tough! A screwdriver did it, along with some paint damage, oh well.
Image
Then I simply put in the new spring cam and threaded the new screw through, then used a punch and hammer to get the retainer back down
Image

When I began the repair the broken spring cam (half of it) was still on the spring and I was using it as a leverage point to pry up the retainer, when I did this a piece of the cam just sheared off. Maybe it was a bad batch of steel or something, but very brittle and strange. The rest of the reel seems pretty solid even if made in China. Next, I'm going to go and put blue Loctite on all the screws, should be pretty bombproof, hopefully. I have a 1595 RC too. I sold off my vintage medalists, but at some point I'll get a few of the classics. Oh and the original screw maybe had a speck of marring on one area of the threads but it looks fully functional. I replaced it anyway. If anyone is in desperate need of a brake adjustment screw, contact me.

I am bringing this older thread back up to show a buddy of mine. Not only was I wrong that the Original Poster needed a new reel...
but I forgot that there is a place to order replacement parts for Medalists reels and that it works great. (Ereplacement parts)
So Jim - here you go. (as I remove my foot from my mouth)

but the all-metal One Pfoot replacement drag screw is so much nicer.

These last few posts make me think I need to rebuild my 1498.
