Can anyone give me any information/opinion on the new Ross Gunnison Heritage reel? Seems it will be coming out soon from Telluride Angler. Looks nice and all American made. The price looks good to me too. Thanks in advance.

You've been hiding for a while.

Orvis sold off Ross to the owners of Abel, so this might be a nice limited edition run and your chance to get a new Gunnison.
I've got an email in to my local shop, did you try your local Ross dealer? From Ross's site, it appears that they should be available through your local shop, but they probably have to preorder them.

I preordered one from telluride anglers website. They look nice but didn't know much about them.

Interesting that they say it will be made in Montrose, CO. I'd have guessed all Ross operations would have been consolidated in CA at Abel HQ.

Anyway, good to see them bring this reel back, and the price is not as obscene as I'd have guessed. Next up, a re-issue of the San Miguel?

It was a very smart choice on the part of Ross. It's a good-looking reel, functional and self-reliant beyond all need - to the point of being boring

A reel with style for any fly rod of any heritage.
Nice to see Ross returning to their roots.

I liked the looks of it (although on the boring side..) but it was quite heavy.
What I really didn't like (and that's why I sold it) was the clicker & drag combo. The clicker was way too lod for my taste and no way to disable it since it's a part of the drag system.

You can disable the clicker very easily but the drag will rely entirely on the disc brake and it can free spool if set too low. I disabled the clicker on my Cimarron for many years because I thought the clicker was too loud. I just had to be careful about how I set the drag. It's certainly not a perfect system, but aside from that it works well as far as disc drags go.

You can remove the pay clicker, but the wind clicker is here to stay, and it's the loud one

it never bothered me, because it's a fact of the ratchet mechanism, which is a tried-and-true process.

Ah ... my experience is only with the Cimarron, and the wind clicker on that is pretty quiet. It's quite nice, actually.

Certainly the Gunnison is one of the Modern Classics.

Great to see Ross Reels going back to it's roots and I bet we'll see the San Miquel again at some point.

wouldn't a new Lamson LP Lite be a hoot?

I'd vote for both the San Miguel and the Colorado as classics that could be revived. Not too crazy about the silly flag engraving on the back, though ...

I've always wanted one and have grown tired of battling for one on the auction site so I've pre-ordered the #2. Won't be ready until sometime in June ... looking forward to getting it.

I sold mine a couple of years ago because I wasn't fishing it, and someone should be.
With it, they bought the karma of literally 1000 fish to hand, even the bycatch of sockeye salmon when fishing for Alaskan rainbows and dollies.

ibookje, the new reel weights are actually very appealing:

WEIGHT
4.5 oz. 5.0 oz. 5.5 oz., respectively for the Gunnison 1, 2 and 3.

I am actually eying the Gunnison 3. It has a narrow profile (.80"), with a 3.5" diameter and weighs 5.5oz. I think it will balance well and proportionately fit with a lot of glass 6wt. and 7wt. rods.

Yep. My Cimarron 2 is the same weight and balances a 5wt 8' glass rod decently, altho I think a C3 would be slightly better.

That's the problem with a lot of new reels ... they are designed to balance lightweight graphite and weigh under 4oz or conversely, are 8-10oz for spey rods. It's not easy to find a 5-6oz reel unless you look at vintage designs.

I would love to see a run of LP clutches. I have some LP's but one or two needs a rebuild (I know. .. send them to Arch).

I got the call back from my local shop. Any ross distributor can order them, so give your local shop some business.

The Ross site states they are post98 spool compatible. (sounds like they dusted off the patterns or even found some old ones in the closet :-) ).

I have to check my inventory. I may be getting a new G2.

Not sure how the reissue will sound, but my 1st gen #2 Gunnison is very 'distinct" to the ear. It's never bothered me as it's the most dependable, bulletproof reel I've ever owned.

Bulldog had a good post on the clicker sound of the Gunnisons back in the archive. They do not evoke the romantic sound of a hardy lightweight and I am being gracious. I think of them as the disk drag equivalent to the medalist (and no, we don't need a pimped medalist picture here). They are not the prettiest but they certainly are bulletproof.

I ordered a G2 through my local shop today. I don't get a chance to buy much from them, since I don't seem to be interested in most of what they carry.

I would like the R1 flowered reels to come back. I can't ever find one for sale and when I do, just can't pay what they want.

I have a number of the Ross R 3's, 3.5's, S-1, and S-3 reels. I made rods for Ross and his wife in exchange for them and spare spools. They are my favorite of all the reels I have. Machined from solid blocks of aluminum.
