A few years ago in Tasmania there was a Microdex trophy fished for each year. People used the tip section of either graphite or cane rods with a winch and handle on the base and a Microdex reel loaded with a fly line cut in half. Fish up to 3lb or so were landed from some tiny creeks in the north of the state. Since the initiator of the idea passed away a couple of years ago the "competition" is no longer held.

Funny. I'm fishing with quite a few Young made reels and none of them have JW YOUNG written on them.
I have a green Shakespeare Beaulite that looks great paired up with an Abercrombie and Fitch "Yellowstone Special" (766 Phillipson). Hardy JET, 8'0" HDH with a Farlows Serpent; Hardy 8'6" HDH with a Daiwa "Strike Force"; Paddock 836 with a Shakespeare Beaulite (two tone) ; Kenney 835 with a Shakespeare Worcestershire 2526 and my C Barclay 7105 with a Bruce & Walker "Expert" (3 1/2" narrow arbor).
I suppose you could say I like Youngs!
The lighter reels in those sizes like the Hardy Marquis or Hardy Princess are great reels but they lack the weight to pair with longer vintage/ heavier rods.
Weight. Probably why Hardy is still around and the original JW YOUNG is gone.

Not that Exchequer
Every time I think I'm ready to pare it all down to two or three reels and leave it at that, a beautiful classic like that one shows up. Immaculate.

I'm told the Exchequer came from Jamie Maxtone Graham, and it cost me a MIB Valdex, that came from the collection of the owner of Strike Rite reels

This one wasn't quite so tough, MIB Flymaster

Very nice. I've seen the later Pantons with the tan painted finish but not this earlier version.

You know, this thread is about reels Young made for other companies but as we know, there are also a slew of reels Young made that were never badged for anyone, such as this one. A 3 1/2 in. with a very contracted spool.

I think that is what the Pattern 8 evolved into after they quit using retaining screws.

I know the pattern 8 came out in 1925 - I think they changed the casting once, and changed the internal hardware when it changed in everything, and they also offered options, but doubtful if they changed anything else.

If it's about the Panton, the Panton is a pattern 1 - and the same caliper check I showed in the Panton above, you'll find in many pattern 2a reels.

I was referring to the reel pictured above my post. Except for the stamping of the Allcock's logo, the backplates are identical. That and the contracted spool lead me to believe the Pattern 8 lost its retaining screw feature sometime in the thirties.

Hmm...was just going from memory so I checked Rupe's book. 1939 was when the spring latch was incorporated while the contracted spool was retained. The only Pattern 8 I have for Allcocks is stamped Gilmour.

To me this makes Frank's reel somewhat special because of the limited production. One has to wonder if the war at their doorstep limited the run of these spring latch Pattern 8 and Pattern 5 reels.

I love this thread, and get to add a name. I'm waiting on a young Reflex badged
"Michael Evans & Co, fly fishing specialists".
I'm thinking the composite reel will work well with some 71/2 footers.

Here is my latest addition to my young family. Just received a very nice featherweight. The reel is in great condition, honest wear on it. I’m actuallh impressed with the reel case as well, it too is in great condition. I snapped some pics before cleaning it up and the hot sauce treatment. I threw in a family portrait as well. Cheers

Love those padded vinyl Young (Orvis, Allcock) cases. Keep my Martin MM11 in one.

They are classic, sturdy and not easy to find on their own. I need one more for my flyweight.

Many thanks to Admin for his recovery effort to save photos on this archive thread.

One of our favorite old threads - I'll show the Shakespeare Worcestershire reel, carrying the Allcocks stag logo on the latch plate.
This is the same composite reel and cam-adjusted click-pawl as the Young Neauvex Series I.

And another Big Thanks Again to Admin for restoring this thread, and Tom for his efforts keeping this site going.
Populated internet archives such as FFR are getting rare, not just from photobucket gyrations, but from lack of participation, and being ineffectively replaced by youtubes (admitted, there's good information on youtubes, even some well-edited efforts, but not being a 30-min captive to watch two fish being caught - I keep being reminded of the IQ=6 factor).

The photo essay is the stuff of internet bulletin boards. People who want to read can read, people who only want to look at the photos can do that.
Keep 'em comin' guys.
