There was an older Medalist just listed on eBay with a $20 buy it now or best offer option. Some bonehead just placed a low bid on it at the same time that I clicked buy it now! Now, it's probably going to go for $40. What are these people thinking when they start bidding up the price early?

/end rant
//sorry if it was one of you guys

maybe the guy was unfamiliar with how a "best offer" works.
anyway, i have seen some real weird bidding that defies logic.

I don't get it. If someone inadvertently enters a bid higher than the buy-now, Ebay tells the bidder that and suggests completing the transaction at the B-N price. So I don't know of a circumstance when a bidder can drive a price higher than a listed buy-now. If that is what you put in, you should own the reel. Otherwise, in regular auctions, the person who puts in a higher bid isn't a bonehead, he just wants the item more than somebody else and so is willing to pay more. Bidding is competitive; that's the way it is supposed to work. Possibly the other bidder entered a higher bid a hair sooner than your B-N, so his bid, being entered first, put him first in line to complete the transaction at the B-N price. Again, that is the way it is supposed to work. Sometimes outstanding buy-now bargain prices show up on Ebay. Snooze you lose. For a Pflueger reel, no worry. There will be plenty more.

The message I got when I tried the "buy it now" option said that bidding had already started on the item, so buying it now was no longer allowed. Maybe it was the way the auction was set up.

the way it works on many buy it now sales is that if someone enters a bid below the buy it now price, even a very low bid it cancels the buy it now and begins regular bidding. that is what must have happened here. if it is a good deal on buy it now you have to act fast.

Thanks for that info. I just read the Ebay section on that type of acution/B-N set-up. Hadn't run into it before.

Inevitably when someone places a bid canceling the BIN it results in the item selling for more than the original buy it now price (unless it was an unrealistic price).

Maybe bidder didn't want to pay twenty and thought he may get it for less.

Maybe knew it was worth more than twenty and protecting the seller.

Sometimes you have to pay what an item's worth. I did once back in 1997 and didn't bother me as much as I thought it would.

Ok -- I have not checked in for a while -- but what happened? Some time warp continuum? Folks are replying to messages from 2007?

Maybe I better come back later!

Simpler than Dennis' Star Trek plot. Barry is flyfishing his way through different time warps and accidentally tipped off the seller of the item coveted. Once they realized their error they got a friend to bid on it to drive up the price. See, that was easy. Now all you have to do is go back to 2007 for that BIN deal!
BTW, grab some newly discontinued CFOs and Hardy Glass Perfections while you're at it.

There's nothing wrong with the resurrection of old posts. I rather like it. Welcome, Sawukkid.

Love the past! That's why I often fish with my F E Thomas rod and Young reel and silk line and silk leader and silk flies (north country spiders).

Yup, when fly rods were brown and didn't have to match your eye color.

I'm getting brown contact lenses to match my eyes to my fly rods.

Smart--Very Smart.

Also:

I can see myself using bright orange so people bow hunting for carp can see me.

Or

Blue if wearing shorts and want to match my varicose veins.

All kinds of reasons for those pretty color fly rods.

Barry

In interest of full disclosure I have had good many blue Garcia's and white Wonderods. Maybe few yellow and green also, but I always wished they were brown.

A few questions:
Did Bassackwards get the reel, which would be a good deal today @ $ 40?
How are the brown contacts working for you Lunker75?
How did we get from a BIN on eBay eight years ago to Barry and his varicose veins in blue shorts? Don't you like us Barry? Why would you suggest such an image?

Never did get that reel, but I learned that a few beers and an intemperate comment can always come back to haunt you.
