I just bought a JC Higgins reel for a little over 10 bucks. I'm sure it's not a big collector's item but I've got my Grandpa's old JC Higgins. 22 rifle, so I pretty much picked it up for sentimental reasons. I know it's just a Sears reel but, according to Wikipedia, they stopped selling the Higgins line of sporting goods sometime shortly after they started the Ted Williams line of products in the early 1960's. Does anybody else have any info on Higgins reels?

I have that same reel in fabulous condition. That red is rather striking against the silver frame. THey are pretty reels and I planned to mount mine on my Heddon 10 bamboo but the reel foot is to wide. I think the Higgins will look great on a Western Auto Fiberglass rod I have. These reels are nice to look at, they are functional and while they will never be valuable I believe we can fish the heck out of them on a nice rod and have a great time.

I in my youth I owned a Higgins basketball, casting reel, bicycle and whatallelse. Sears was right downtown.
Enjoy that beauty!

Yes it is Cameron. The old. 22 is the only reason the reel even caught my eye.

Bulldog,
I'm not sure if it's a Bronson. It looks a lot like one but doesn't have the Bronson logo center cap, only the screw and has the JC Higgins logo on the back plate. I'll post some before & after pics as soon as it comes in and I get it cleaned up.

that is the Bronson 360 minus the white cap but with the screw instead. The 370 has that white cap. There is a green 360 on eBay right now. Regardless, it is a simple, nice-looking reel and a good find.

Beau; I can see the whole story unfolding;
Package arrives.
Home General questions content.
Beauglass, "well I seen this reel; it reminded me of me old grand Pappy ... (big tear forms in right eyesocket and drips over the nose to the floor) ... It was saying, take me, take me!"
Home general, convinced of sincerity, puts down the iron skillet and resumes household chores.
Beau sez a little prayer, and immediately makes plans to have next packages sent to brothers house.:hat -p-

so simple and yet so beautiful. That red so red! You got yourself a fine one. What you going to mount it on? I have yet to decide that for mine.

Paul,
I think I'm gonna mount it on the FF805 maybe. To me their simplicity is part of the beauty.

Thanks Cameron. I don't feel so bad now about missing out on that one that was NIB. This one's been used but not very much.

Well ... during a bit of Live Chat last night with beauglass and scud dog ... there could be something very neat coming together for this reel. That is all I am going to say about that ...

Cameron,
I've officially entered into negotiations. I cannot comment until a deal has officially been mutually agreed upon ... :rolleyes

What is the size of this reel? I built a Steffan Brothers 7'6" 4 piece 3wt. that has red wraps on it and some other nice bling and this reel might look real good on it.

I'm pretty sure that is the reel that spawned this for the military. Although it is labeled as made by J&H Smith I think it is a JC Higgins reel modified for this use. Note there is no reel foot! On the handle side one finds porting visible from the inside of the spool underneath the thin aluminum plate with the writing on it.
