I think the drags are a bit stiffer on the JAF. These reels were designed by JW Young (the parts were made in batch by Young and shipped to JAF in the US for assembly) - they just seem to prefer drags a bit stiffer. Honestly, I like the fit-up on the JAF reels better than Hardy - tighter tolerances. JAF has a few plastic parts where Young would have put metal on theirs; otherwise, I would say the finish was better than Hardy, as well. IMO, nothing compares to the last series of marked Young reels - the Jubilee and Revolution.

I use to scour E-bay for Jubilees. They almost never show up. Either they're really rare or the folk who have them won't give them up. Another click-pawl that disappeared in a hurry was the Reddington designed by Ari T. Hart. Anyone have one? How about Reddington's CT series?

Well my favorite reel for trout fishing is my Shakespeare Automatic, but it's silent, no click.
Okay, I'm goofy for old fiberglass rods, but I'm really not that goofy.
I think I stopped using the auto about 30 years ago when I hooked a big rainbow, and it ran the line out (there is no room for backing on those confounded things) and broke him off. Or maybe it was the time I accidentally hit the "trigger" with my pinky and the line ripped off the water spooking every trout within 100 yards. Or maybe it was the time I accidentally dunked it in the river and the sand fouled it up so bad the line wouldn't go in or out anymore. And trust me, you don't want to take them apart when you're standing in the stream!
I bought a Shakespeare Purist (Medallist) shortly after that, and the pillar screws kept working loose.
Finally I ponied up for an Orvis CFOIII and it has been my favorite reel ever since. I love the simplicity. The sound it makes is music. I've since bought a CFO IV for my 6 weight for night fishing, and engage both pawls for those big brown trout that go charging for the nearest logjam when poked by a Parachute Hex. With the double pawls engaged it really lets every other angler within earshot know when I've got a fish on!

here's the Martin LM 45 (equivalent to the Browning Strata MZ34). This is a great little reel - one of the best I've ever handled - from any side of any pond.

no.

I highly recommend watching eBay for these.

I gave my daughter a NIB MZ 34 in her Christmas stocking, and she loves it.

Darn it! Bulldog, couldn't you have waited until I nabbed a couple more MZ34 Stratas before telling the world how great they are! They are my 4/5 weight reel of choice - available in any color you want as long as it's black!

I wish there was a similar reel on the market that is actually in production (now that the Pflueger Supreme 1834 is no longer). It seems like there are good $$$$ reels and nasty reels and nothing in between.

look at it this way - the Japanese haven't discovered them yet. :rollin

Here, we'll distract them with the Orvis Battenkill Featherweight.

Found out what happened with these. They were originally selling the Hardy Lightweight series out of the Orvis catalog. When Hardy was sold, their new management ended the trade with their perceived competition. So Orvis contacted JW Young who rushed out the several models - Battenkill Lightweight, Featherweight and Flyweight from 69-72.

When John Likakis published his warm-water flyfishing newsletter "8-weight Journal", he gave these Browning Midas reels a very good review. Looks like a good deal! Alec

Hey Bulldog,
Thanks for the heads up, got the reel for $30 -I've been looking for a reel for the 9 weight Fenwick Ferulite blank I'm building, and this'll do fine!

I'll post photos when it's done, I have 6 glass rods in various stages of doneness ...

OK - here's an inexpensive click and pawl reel that I enjoy using. It's a 2 3/4" diameter Lamiglas - probably made overseas. They discontinued them rather quickly. It has been a fine performer for me. Cheers, Alec

Alec,
I like the design of the Lamiglas. Another reel to watch for.

Close on the Dogwood Canyon, while the rivets on the back of the reel look like a single pawl arrangement, the product description indicates the dreaded "disc drag". Although the price is definitely right.

On the other hand, the White River Classic Ultra Light has a non-adjustable click/pawl. At 2.2 ounces, it sounds like my kind of reel.

The Just Reels site has Lamiglas spare spools in it's Used/Misc. section. Some nice looking reels on that site ...

I got to check out one of the White River click pawls at Bass Pro Shops -it was really beautiful -an excellent deal for $100. I didn't get it because I was looking for a reel for a 6 weight rod.

One cool thing they showed me (in an attempt to get me to buy the reel) was 10 yard packets of fly line. These are from Cortland, and contain 30 feet of line, which is nice for really small reels, or putting a heavier line on a small reel.

Aaron - that is fantastic! A fully configured dt line just over 30 feet long! Astounding ... and cheap. Hat's off to the guys at Cortland! Alec

Ah hah! Aaron, now I understand the weird capacity figures for that White River Ultra Light. They were referencing the 10 M Cortland line. I thought the number looked weird, but it was too late at night to figure out.

Thanks!

Just thought I would throw in another word on the White river Classic UL. I have on in black and it is an absolute sweetheart of a reel. Balances nicely on a 6.5' 2wt graphite and would be great for any short glass rod in the light line weights. They also have a nice gold/champagne colored model that looks really nice ... nowhere near as bright as the Pflueger Supreme 1834. If that Pflueger 1834 cam in black it would be the perfect little 3/4 wt click reel.

Andy, I know the equivalent reel was sold as an H-I Sportcraft 100. Don't know who made it, but you can be sure it was in New England.
I have the 60 size and it's a great little reel.

goldenstair,

If you are going to spend $100 ... get an Orvis BBS they are really nice for the money. Looks good, sounds good, works good.

Hey Glassbender - Nice Ryobi! I too like 'em. Here's my Ryobi 255MG. This is a great light line reel. Cheers, Alec
