Great find on the Caps reel. I have one without the agate. Have been looking for one with one. But all out of my price range. Great reels.

Here is a Garcia Kingfisher GK-42. Another Hardy clone. One I don't often see. It is a cool color, sort of a dark bronzy brown frame and spool. Very similar to the Eagle Claw, Heddon, et al, except it has a triangular handle. I realized when I got it that it is missing the collar/shim under the handle, and the lineguard. But it gets better. Last week I picked up a lot of three reels including another GK-42 with lineguard and shim. Waiting on that lot of three so I can put this baby together. Notice the 'g' badge in the lower right side of the photo. this is the Garcia logo on an adhesive backed piece of foil that fits in the center of the spool latch. Neat.

Pat, I think mine is one of these but it's missing the back circular label. Mine is about 3 1/2". Is it the same ? I love the Bronzy Brown color also! If you need anything else for parts just let me know!

Then I came across the Garcia Kingfisher GK-40 which is about 2 7/8". I have been meaning to try the Hardy pawls to see if it would purr a little smoother? Love this reel!!

Hey Russ, thanks, i appreciate that. The Garcia logo sticker goes on the front in the center of the spool latch. this one is 3"'diameter. Yes these are a cool color. Will look neat on vintage glass. If you try a Hardy pawl in yours you'll have to let me know how it works out.

Thanks Brian. Fishing reels should be brown, damn it! Or something like that.

Maroon is good. This South Bend 1122 looked gorgeous on my Phillipson Deluxe - matched the color almost perfectly.

Image

Unfortunately, it's such a piece of crap reel I got rid of it - sold it for $4.99 on eBay. Here's the write-up I posted on the sale -

"South Bend Model 1122 Fly Reel. Looks nice, but unfortunately the spring & pawl drag (“clicker’) does not work properly. I have put a bit of epoxy behind the drag button which causes the pawl to remain permanently engaged in the gears - it won’t come unengaged. I did this because the drag button does not remain engaged by itself, causing it to spin freely without clicking, i.e. no drag. Apparently this is a common problem for this particular make and model of reel. Anyway, this is being sold as-is. If you have a similar model that works well, this will provide a nice spare spool or if you have a kid you want to start fly-fishing, this would make a good cheap starter reel."

My epoxy fix actually worked - at least the drag stayed on instead of going out when needed - but by that time I was SO done with this reel I didn't want to fish it anymore.

1.

There are plenty of piece-o-crap reels out there that actually work. Some people seem to like these - the guy who bought it was delighted. I'm happy for him.

I agree 100% on the South Bend 1122. Definitely the worst reel I've ever owned and I've bought and tried plenty of crappy reels. I didn't have the conscious to re-sell mine but I did sell the spool figuring if someone had one one holding together somehow, they might as well have a second spool for it.

My conscience didn't bother me a bit, since I described it and its flaws accurately and sold it for a price suitable for just the spool.

The finalist 1122 isn't the most elegant reel, but it is simple and works (most of the time). I'm not a fan of any of the caliper reels (even the ones that are a step above and beyond like the Kinea). On any of these old blue collar reels that have a pawl that slides in and out of the calipers I've found that it is best to keep it engaged and don't mess with it.

Oh and the brick red is pretty.

you'll find more SB 1122 that used to work than otherwise - I wouldn't count on it to be a long-lived reel

This is a Scientific Anglers system9 I got at a swap sale for $30.I did try to sell it on ebay but changed my mind and I'm going to keep it.I think a DT&F will fit on it just fine and it balances well with my 8 1/2 foot Parametric. It's well used and the handle is a bit loose but it is generally fairly tight. It's just a Hardy Marquis with a different name so the quality is good.ImageImage

Stonefly, that's a great find and a great price -- you stole it! Those are nice reels. I believe made by Hardy for Sci Anglers.

OK, here's the Medalist click-pawl, also shared by the early Gem.
Image
It has a small drag gear, which gives it a fairly coarse drag, but adjusting the spring tension can make it work very well.

The later Gem has the same spring and pawl, moved outward a touch, and this notably larger drag gear
Image
Tweaking the spring tension on this reel can give you an extremely smooth click-pawl.

You are of course absolutely right about the coarse drag pressure right from the factory - need to play with the springs to protect tippets.

What about click pawl reels from Kettle Creek Tackle . They look like really nice machined stainless steel reels for $90. Anyone own one?

The Kettle Creek reels are the same as the Cortland Retro reel, except they have a different label and sell for $30 less than what Cortland is asking. I've handled one. IMO, it's a nice reel for the price.

Three variations on a classic theme - the BFR RimFly. L to R, the 55, the 75 and the 95. BFR (British Fly Reels) made these under their own label and for various outfits like Orvis - in fact, the 95 had an Orvis label on it but as you can see on the 55 (which I bought NIB on eBay), the labels are kind of cheesy and don't last all that well.

Image

Image

The interior of the 95. They're pretty much all the same except the 55 lacks the adjustable drag. I guess you could use some kind of marker or scribe to indicate on the spool what kind of line it holds. I prefer a sticker on the outside and if I don't have one from the line manufacturer, I make them myself.

Image

I like the little guide BFR gives you - it's also printed on the box - as to their recommended line capacities.

I recently got a mint, unused three inch Speyco reel from a gentleman on the Classic Rod Forum and it will do nicely with my Hexagraph 8 foot, 4/5 rod or a couple of bamboos, 7.5' and 7' 9", both for 5 weight. It is a very simple reel, but totally hand manchined and a real jewel. The click and pawl mechanism is so super simple, but made of top notch materials. I see a lot of true elegance in simple reels with top notch, hand crafted workmanship like the Speycos.

A sort of a hybrid - the Ocean City 76. It has a click pawl, but it also has a friction drag in the form of a piece of - felt? - that the spool is compressed against by a knurled knob under the screw that holds the spool in place. Pretty clever and it works well.
Image

If I understand the old line weight designations correctly, the little dial that is meant to show the weight of the line is set for the line I have on it - GBG is a double tapered 3 wt.
