Not to hijack but you can get a 7'10" 8 or 8/9 (the big brother of the 777) directly from Mike M in his Ameriglass Big Game series.

Not exactly - my tapers are different than Mike's and are not commercially available. But yes, you can get blanks from McFarland.

I know they're not the same as his house tapers, just offering a solution for someone looking for a blank you don't offer.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on the Blue Ridge Special prototype (2/3 as opposed to the 3/4 production rod), and ... wow. I love it.

Someone asked me whether it was parabolic or progressive, and I'm not qualified to answer that. Some of each, right? But what I can say is that it feels right in my hand; it roll casts well, has no problem with flies at least up to #8 beadchain clousers and master splinter mice (I did throw a #12 something for a bit today, and that was even better!), and even though I'm a mediocre, mostly self-taught caster, I was able to easily put the fly where I wanted it at 40-45 ft. Casts in the 15-30 ft. range were effortless.

I caught just one little bluegill and one bass of about 10 inches, and the bass was a lot of fun on this rod. I fished it today with an Orvis Battenkill I from another rod, already spooled-up with a Chinese WF3F (102 grains, if I recall). The reel balanced the rod well. I'll be giving the rod a more serious workout Sunday with the SA Heritage Presentation WF3, and I may try a few other reel and line combos as well.

Fit and finish is just what you'd expect from Chris. It's a really fine, and fine-looking, rod. I'm looking forward to getting to know it better!

Great looking rods Chris. I hope you can escort your lineup to Michi-Glass this year.
Mark.

Thanks guys!

Aaron- so glad you’re enjoying that special little rod!

Mark, in wish I could! I’ll be in Texas visiting family about that time.

I wanted to add some updated pictures that my friend DaveF took for me.

I absolutely love my 79 Synthesis fly rod. I have been catching a bunch of sunfish with it lately and it has been a blast. First thing I noticed when I picked it up is that it is very light especially for E glass at 2.5 oz. For me it is very accurate at 15-30 foot cast, shoots line with ease with a tight loop using a single or especially a double haul and roll cast very well. The rod build by Chris is awesome and the magnet in the butt is genius.

Anybody else fishing with Chris Barclay’s new Synthesis fly rods?

I have been using the 68 Blue Ridge Special. A wonderful rod for small brook trout streams here in northern PA.

I am kicking myself for not test casting his 68 Synthesis at the Carolina Conclave. I did try his 72 and 82 which are awesome. At the next conclave I will cast all of others that I haven’t yet that is for sure.

I realized I was off on the accuracy range for me, I thought the Rio Gold changes color at 30 ft but it is more close to 40 so I am off by 10ft on the upper range. I am sure that a more experienced caster than I can be very accurate with the 79GP at even further distances.

I just received his Jackpot 777 Synthesis rod and plan on fishing it on the Texas coast next week - we'll see.

Good luck fishing and let us know how the rod performs for you. I haven’t caught a redfish with a fly rod , I am hoping to change that in September at Nags Head NC.

I cast some of Chris’s Synthesis rods at the Carolina conclave, and certainly if I had to pick one that stood out it would be the 68. In my hands it threw a tight loop and I was able to be accurate close in and at more distance that I would reasonably expect to use the rod. Roll casting was also comfortable and easy.

I am thinking about adding more glass to tool box. The 8’2” Tailwater seems to be a perfect addition.

I liked the 82 a lot, but have a couple of 8' 5 wts I really like, so didn't spend much time with it.

Caught a good size rainbow using a green #8 wooly bugger with the 79GP along with some small sunfish during a lunch break. Had a decent smallmouth bass on but it shook the hook. The rainbow made a couple jumps and made the rod bend well. Wish I would of brought a net along to take a better pic but I guess it was almost 18 inches.Image
