I am looking for a nice fiberglass casting rod to go with a nice 4 screw Ambassadeur 5000 that I recently acquired on the auction site. I am looking at the Garcia Conolon 4 and 5 star and the Fenwick Ferralite casting rods. Are these the best? What others should I consider?

The Japanese are very fond of the Phillipsons which is why they usually sell for a lot. Never cast one myself.

I don't know about baitcasting, but I have a 50's Howald process Wonderod spinning rod that when coupled with a 50's vintage closed face SB spinning reel, just flat does the job. It has a great feel, and has enough flex that slinging lures requires almost no effort.

Berkley Buccaneer 1-pc. You usually see them with the floor-shifter grip, but if that doesn't bother you, it's a nice blank.

My Ambassadeur 5000 arrived in great shape. I now have a Shakespeare Wonderod baitcaster, PB-B 110 6' 0" with a ECL(Nov 68) datecode on the way. It is a pretty one with a green reel seat and white fiberglass. I am hoping this will prove to be a nice period baitcasting rig.

I have a Shakespeare labeled Ted Williams baitcaster with matching Ted Williams reel that I use. The only thing I would mention is to watch the butt of the rod. The vintage of mine they didn't have anything behind the last inch or so of the rod butt and they will let go or break off when the cork weakens.

Have had lots of fun with mine

My Wonderod baitcaster arrived today. I intalled the 5000 and wiggled it. It feels quite a bit more flexible than my graphite Berkley Lightning Rod. What I thought would be snow white has a very slight green tone to it. It has green wraps with silver foil under the spiral tipping. The reel seat is a hunter green. With the red reel on there it looks like Christmas.

I have a thing for the white Wonderods. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Our group fishes almost entirely with vintage baitcasting reels and rods. When it comes to fiberglass my favorite rods are both 6ft one piece Actionrods. They seem to do all the work when casting 3/8 oz Baits. I pair them with narrow spool Coxe 25N's both of which are pre- 1951 (german silver frames as opposed the aluminum framed Coronets)

There is a reason the Japanese like the Phillipson casting rods. They are very good. Practically cast themselves. With many selling at over $1000 you'd think someone would duplicate them as there is a demand

Sorry I'm late to the party, but the hands-down best glass bass rod ever is the Falcon Glass rod - set up a permanent ebay search for this rod, and do not pass go if one shows up.

I've had Heddon Pal, Silaflex, Browning, Fenglas and Lew's, but Falcon is it.

ABU made som really nice hollow fiberglass casting rods in the fifties. My favourite is the medium action 5´6´´ Corona.

Falcon glass is still turning up on ebay about twice/year - I got an e-mail alert to one last week.
