Dear Board,

I have an old yellow Fenwick blank model SP782 that I bought several years ago and never built. The blank is brand new as it arrived in a sealed plastic envelope but I have no real idea what a built rod from this blank would be like? I'm certain the SP means spinning and I was thinking of putting a sliding ring cork reel seat and foul-proof guides on it in hopes of making a nice 6' 6" medium action spinning rod for 6 to 10 pound test line that will match up with a Quick 220 reel I have laying around collecting dust.

Any of you have any opinions on those ideas? Is the blank heavier or lighter than I am thinking? What would you folks build out of it?

Regards,
Goobs

Your idea is about right ... The "2" in the SP782 model number is the power rating, "1" being the lightest. It's probably for 3-6 pound lines and 1/4 - 1/2oz. lures.

I think your plan with that blank is fine. An old Fenwick catalog lists it as a 6'6" spinning rod, fast action, 1/8-3/8 oz lures, 0.550" at the butt and 5 1/2 size tip top. The catalog doesn't list recommended line sizes, but I think Fred has it pegged.

Sincerely Carsten
