The Lami's are the answer. I have those 6 pc Lamiglas rods in 6'6", 7', 7'6" (the sweetheart), and the 8 ft. I like the first three as 4 weights and the 8 ft rod fishes best for me as a 6 wt. Sometimes I use a 5 wt on the 7'6" rod if I know the casts will be short.

I really like my 10 piece axisco 3wt. I use a 4wt on mine. If you have the patience to piece together the it is a winner. It is a great travel rod. Otherwise, I use my Steffen 4/5wt.

Caught yesterday with plenty of power in the butt to haul it in.Image

The Fenwick Voyageurs in almost any of the models they came in have consistently been the travel glass I've liked best.

I recommend L Kenney's 8055. It casts and fishes as well as any 2 or 3 piece and much better than most. Larry helped develop Scott's famous G 8'4 5 piece graphite series and his 8055 glass rod reflects that. It fishes like glass should and is the most versatile multi piece rod I've personally fished.

I’ve got a few 5 piece rods, and a bunch of 4 piece. Some will fit certain luggage or packs, some won’t. Seems like you’re dealing with a specific space, so I think the crucial question is what length you’re trying to match. And it’s worth thinking if that rod length needs to be inside a solid case (i.e. really a measurement of the case that protects the rod) or if the specific space is secure and sturdy enough that the rod can just be in a rod bag. The inch plus that a case takes over the rod length has messed up my attempts to get a fit before.

Yes. Best 5 weight I've fished in any configuration - better than the G845/5 IMO. I have the G844/5, G845/5, and G846/5. If Larry made 5 piece rods in 4 or 6 weight I'd order them in a second.

The Cabelas CGR rods are three piece and very inexpensive if you don't want to spend a lot. I have three of them, and the 7 footer is nice and compact in a three piece.

I'm with Paveglass. The Lami is hard to beat. I built a 6'6" 6 pc and its a sweetheart but you can lean into it if you want to with a 4 wt line. Good luck finding one. I swerved into a NOS blank a few years ago and snatched it. If I found another one in any length I'd buy it without hesitating. Easier to find would be a Fenwick FF70-4, which I also have and enjoy in a variety of situations. FYI: the Lami breaks down to 13.5" and I have it in a tube that's just under 16". The Fenwick in its original tube is around 22". Easily packable.

I have a 5-piece Steffen 8’ 5/6 that is my go anywhere, do anything rod. I bought it from a forum member a few years ago.
It’s a teensy bit faster than the 3-piece version, but that doesn’t bother me - in fact, I like it that way.

If I could have only one rod, this would be it.

Here's a sweet little travel rod I picked up from Shane Gray last week. It's an 8 piece 6'8" 3wt. and casts like a dream.

I used a 406 DT3 (naturally) and one of our new Harvey Style Leaders which will be available shortly. Hard to see but the wraps are varigated thread and have a shadow like color - really cool!

The telescoping glass fly rod from Rose Wood mentioned earlier is available from Amazon for 19.99. Curiosity compelled me to buy it, since Amazon discounted it for me another 30% so I am only out $14 including shipping! Couldn't pass that up.

I like pack rods. I did a chapter in my new book on the Brule "Pack and Trail" rod, and I enjoy my Fenwick Voyageour, South Bend Outdoorsman, W&M, Longfellow, and several others for hiking and/or biking trips. These vintage pack rods tend to be heavier than I'd like so I need to get Barclay to make me a proper 3 weight travel rod.

Well, the Rosewood 6'6" telescoping rod arrived and I took it out for an afternoon. First impression is that for 14 bucks, it wasn't the worst investment. It has a VERY soft tip, but casted a three weight sufficiently well enough. Got into some decent sunfish and the rod handled them well. Listen, you're never going to mistake it for a Barclay or a Steffen, but if you're packing for a hike or need a compact rod to bring along on this will certainly do in a pinch.

It came in a black rod sock with a rubber protector for the tip, which was a nice touch. I'm going to stash this in my bike pack so that if I ever see an out of the way place to fish I can have a chance of catching one.

I like the Berkley Buccaneer to be honest. You can get them for close to nothing and they easily fit into my luggage. I had a lot of fun with it in the WI driftless. I am currently refurbishing mine, inspired by ARReflections's post.

Epic's 476 Packlight is pretty awesome. 5 piece, and has slip-over ferrules as opposed to spigots. I have a couple - so if you are interested in one then PM me.

Larry Kenney does a 5 piece 8 foot 5 weight. I would get one, but I have too many rods in that size range...

I also am a fan of the Berkley Buccaneer. I got one of the spin/fly combo ones (i know not the preferred version) and stripped it down, citri-stripped the paint and re-wrapped on dedicated fly guides.

Personally I look at anything that will be carried on a bike or a plane as disposable considering the higher chance of damage or loss, so I'd rather sink $30 all in on a travel rod than $300. But I'm also not a gambler so take this with a grain of salt :D
