Looking forward to hearing your reports about that new 865. I'm sure it'll be great. And while you're waiting for Chris to finish the build you can focus on that 3/4 wt decision!

You made a great choice, the best long glass on the market.

Taeke, hello I have no doubt your right. Larry is a Fabulous rod designer. When I fished graphite rods the the old G series were my absolute favorites. I’ll rephrase Dusty’s 8’6” and 8’9” 5 wts. are in the top 2 best long glass rods on the market

I think it's admirable that you've set a limit at five rods total. If somebody doesn't grab that 8'2" 3wt that Chris Barclay has up for sale right now, it may soon become my 6th—Barclay.

Alas, it is gone (to IL) :D

Congratulations John and I'm glad I'm no longer able to get it. What I need is either more self restraint OR a storage unit.
You're gonna have to post about it after an outing or two.

Will do Scud - I had Chris's 723 and it was nice but....... I told myself I'd stick with 4 wts. or higher, but this rod pulled at me for some reason. We'll see - I hope it will the perfect 3 wt glass rod for trout in The Driftless, or maybe some pond bluegills on a real calm day.

Taeke, thank you and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all on the glass board. Hopefully the new year will bring some rain and snow to California. It has been a long, dry, warm fire disasters fall.

You might have to wait a while for a report, trout season here is 5-6 months away. But I will write a report when I get it on the water.

I will spend the dark months of winter contemplating a fun 4-weight rod, and of course tying some flies.

i think you should go with a steffen 3/4, it is a very nice 3wt that works great with 4wt line too but mostly it just will do anything you ask it to. i have a 4/5 and imho the 3/4 is teh best fly rod mark makes. just works so well at anything you ask it to do.

:) I'm always thinking this kinda exercise is an attempt by people to exercise moderation. It's kinda like the folks that choose to get the breakfast buffet vs the folks who order from the menu. You know if you get the buffet you're getting more bacon and sausage than you should. I have more rods than I fish through the season. I understand the idea of limits. I also have my days I want to hit the buffet!
I respect the quest for moderation and I understand the idea of you only have one life to live why not sample what you can.
You older folks may remember the hair color advertisement : " You have only one life to live. Why not live it as a blonde?".
:lol

Moderation... what an interesting theoretical concept, and BORING! ;)
sorry, could not help myself.

Had the Barclay 8'2" 3 wt. out on the yard a couple days ago. Rio Gold 3 and Barrio Smallstream 4 both worked great. Have a Sylk DT4 and a SA GPX DT3 yet to try, but guessing they will be great also. Very comfortable rod with different lines so far - a real gem imo!

Morten,
All the best with getting the five rods together. Some advice: don't beat yourself up if you wind up with more than five rods. We only live once, enjoy the journey. I'm finding myself with more than five three weights; four weights and six weights. I'm proud to say that I have only four five weights. I'm like the master of moderation but I have a confession. I'm thinking/jonesing about getting one of those new T&T Lotics in the 7105 (just what I "need").
