Best deal was an 8' Payne 200. It had varnish melt but otherwise was in good shape.
$100.

We have a local store that buys up stock from insurance salvage, and occasionally they will buy out the stock from a sporting goods store. On one lot of merchandise, I was able to pick up an 8' 3 piece 4 weight Winston WT and a G. Loomis Streamdance Metolious, each at 50-60% off. I noticed all the rods had price stickers from K&K Flyfishers in Kansas. I assumed these were surplus stock being sold off. I later learned that all these rods and reels had been stolen from K&K. Insurance came through to replace the stolen items. The stolen items were later found in Texas, and sold by the insurance company to Walls Family Bargain Center. This is why whenever I see a lot of cars parked in front of the store, I always stop to see what they have now.

Fly fishing: A metal box ( with a flip lid and compartments inside that I use to keep fly tying gear) that came with a Meek 55, a raised pillar Winchester fly reel and a Montague hard rubber fly reel (60 yard).
$40.00

My best deal ever...
CZ BRNO 16Ga ZP47 $50.00

Years ago I saw an add for Robichard fly reels, $200. I bought one and after looking at it I bought another. Never used and they seem to be going up yearly.
Worse move was ordering 2 trout reels from Stan Bogdan, and cancelling the order when he called and said they were ready. He had no problem as the next person on the list moved up. I want to say they were $700 apiece at the time.

Phillipson DF76 "Swamp Fox" from a public auction for $35. The rod was near mint with original sock and tube.
Fenwick FF70 1967 vintage. It was never fished but came without the tube and sock. $25

Whoa, good get! I love my 9' 5wt.

If "best deal" can be stretched to include something you had no hand in and didn't see coming, then mine would be the envelope under the tree with two nights paid at a cabin in Hope Valley. Streams and lakes in every direction.

In terms of bargaining, it probably would be a pristine auction site FF112S with fighting butt, absolutely unused, for $65.00. No other bidders. I'm really having fun with that one as a switch/short spey rod with skagit heads.

Recently picked up a Valentine 350, which appears to be unused, for $140. Again, no other bidders. The auction site really confuses me this way.

Any time the stars line up at Cabelas and you can get free shipping on top of a heavy discount is a best deal scenario.

My best deal was Lamiglas FF 703 I bought directly from the Factory many years ago.
It was a great deal not because of the price (unfavorable exchange rate, expensive shipment, Custom Duty and VAT in Italy), but because it was my first opportunity to enter the amazing world of fiberglass rods and everything runs together with it.

A CFO III over on the bamboo board classifieds one early am - inverted script - I was the 7th or 8th person that viewed the post and I jumped on it!

I picked up a very clean 8' Heddon Black Beauty with bag and tube off ebay for a good price, but when it arrived the two piece rod was actually a three piece, the tip having been broken and repaired with a nicely fit, permanently fixed black ferrule. The seller refunded the funds and told me to keep the rod! It's still a sweet, full flex 6 weight with tiger striping in the brown glass, just a little heavier in the tip. :)

While browsing this board about 3 am some months ago a 7'6 5 wt. Morgan Fine Tackle build was listed on the for sale forum. Christian had posted pics of it when it was new and it was my favorite Fine Tackle build ever, which is saying a lot. I didn't hesitate. It wasn't inexpensive but for me it was a once in a life time opportunity to get one of my Holy Grail rods. Best deal ever for me.

An Orvis/Phillipson pack rod built from a kit, barely used, and a Fenwick FF 806 as new/shopworn. I wasn't looking for either but my eyes were open. Ten dollars each. I probably could have dickered 2 for $18, but I paid the full marked price, plus one dollar ten cents for the Governor.

My best deal ever was a couple years ago when I purchased a 7' Orvis Battenkill bamboo rod along with a Scientific American System 5 reel, loaded with SA line. Everything was in very good condition. I paid 125.

At a small local shop for used books I found a copy of Art Flick's "Streamside Guide". It seems to be from the first edition, and it cost me just $5.00. I don't know if it has any real monetary value but I like to think I got a good deal.

A pair of Fenwicks for $36 - FF806 and FF79. The 806 was practically new and the 79 had a very repairable tip. The 806 remains one of the best roll-casters I have, which makes a great training rod for newbies. The 79 makes for an excellent back-up.

I've had a few through the years but the best deal was a bundle of rods from a flea market for $10 in the bunch was a fisher 8' 5 wt. It was a factory rod, I think I remember it being marked 3 jays. I should get out and fish it, I for got I had it.

Could be a 7wt T & T Paradigm. I know the 7wt has become a bastard child to most, but I was wanting to try a 7 for windy days here on Puget Sound. When this came up on the local board, for what I consider fairly cheap, I did a little research and snapped it up. Gorgeous rod in like new condition, built for saltwater, but has a nice moderately fast action. Not a fan of the Uber fast SW sticks, but this one is just right.
Or it could be the Force Fins I bought from the local dive shop. "These fins are crappy for diving. I'll take $40 just to get rid of them." Done sez I.

Dloy,
I think the Paradigm rods were the high water mark for T&T. Good score!
Streamers, steelhead and all that.

A few years ago I had a bamboo light salmon rod built for $1000. I advertised it a year later and got a PM from a well known bench-made reel maker who offered to trade me even for one of his reels. I couldn't bring myself to fish such an expensive reel and sold it a few months later for $1750. This was unusual for me because I usually lose money on gear :)
