There was some press back in the Fall about this rod but nothing since. Does anyone know if T&T still plans to introduce this rod in 2017? Nothing glass-wise on their website aside from the Heirloom.

They are trying to get the color of the blanks dialed in. At this point they hope to have rods available by April, but they aren't making any promises.

Thanks, Joe. I'm looking forward to casting one of these, but as a new retiree I probably won't be able to afford one. I do have the 3 wt. Heirloom that I picked up during my working days and it's an incredible rod. It will be interesting to see how the 2 rods compare.

I spoke with a T&T representative this weekend at a fly fishing show in Pleasonton California. He said that he liked the new line of rods better than the Heirlooms. He also shared that he thought the Heirlooms were too slow... I'm guessing he might be coming from a graphite fishers perspective.

Did they mention when they are available for sale to the public?

No demo models at the show and the rep that I spoke with didn't mention anything about a release date. Seems like it might be awhile.

Heirlooms have fast progressive tapers and stiffen up into the handle to give a swelled butt effect. Not slow at all.

Any feedback on these rods from the forum? I think they are about to ship or are doing so...

they are offered now on T&Ts website as well as Bearsden. $595, not at all unreasonable. Wish they had spigot ferrules. I didn't think the Heirlooms were slow at all but faster is OK too. T&T hasn't made many clunkers over the years, I'm anxious to see a review.

Why is it $595 on the T&T site but $760 on Bears Den? That's a heck of a markup.

I could have sworn they were listed at $595 on Bears Den yesterday. $760 is the price of the Heirloom, hopefully an error by a confused employee.

On eBay you can get a Lotic for $595 + $14.95 for shipping.
Has ANYONE cast one?
BTW...for that price I figured shipping would be free.

Well the price is more or less in line with high end custom rods - - the real question is how do the rods cast?

I got to mess around with the 3 WT last fall when I visited their workshop in MA. I believe it was the finished product, they were just working on the color of the blank at that point.

The rod was very light in hand and deadly accurate. May be on the faster side of Medium, but not much if at all. It struck me as the kind of rod that instantly becomes an extension of your body, where you think your fly to where you want it rather than cast it. Good rod, price point is right on for performance, quality, and warranty.

Hope T&T keeps the proportions of the rod right.
Too often I see huge (especially in length) grips and reel seats (especially the screw part sticking out) on short & light rods.

Coincidentally I just handled the 3 wt again at my local shop. Didn't cast it, but was blown away again by how light in hand it is. My pal even had me hold the latest Hardy glass side by side and the Hardy was noticeably heavier.

The Lotic's blue blank is pretty stunning, too.

Tom Dorsey always designed great rods in terms of proportions. In fact, it's his rod designs that set my expectations for the elements that go into a great rod, particularly the length of the grip.

So the Lotics follow suit, perfect proportions. Even the Contact rods, which are all 10'+ have relatively smaller grips so you get more out of the rod.

I actually commissioned a Kabuto rod with a short grip, an 8' 3wt. Over sized grips are a real shame.

I've seen many T&T rods with way too big grips. T&T seems to 'specialize' in too long screws on their unlocking seats

Really? Maybe some of the "newer" models during their lackluster years.

Just a few images that's easy to identify being a factory built T&T:

Way too long grips:

I agree, that one on the bottom is too long. I think Joe Goodspeed, one of the current designers at T and T, has done an unbelievable job at the new line of rods.

A long grip which can be held comfortably at different positions is merely versatile - so probably a good thing more often than not. A long Ritz, Cigar or superfine is usually quite nice to fish with. Granted some specialty rods don't need long grips and less is more.

The long screw on the handles that effectively forms a short fighting butt is not to my absolute favourite but it's hardly a capital sin - speaking of T&T appointments. Personally I do wish they would bring back their great cap and ring reel seats. Obviously the market doesn't widely appreciate them as most manufacturers move away from them - look at the Scott F2 and G2 series.

I like the T&T grips. I had as many as six of them during the 1980's and 1990's. I agree with Giogio. Longer grips are nice. They allow the hand room to roam. Helps cut down on hand cramps. The small grips may be good for women and other people with smaller hands but I view more cork as better. Value added! ;)

We agree to disagree :)

I like grips that are in balance with the length of the rod.
The older (pre 2000) T&T rods had smaller grips than the post year 2000 rods.

The Lotic seems to have pre formed grips (as 99% of factory rods do these days).
