I know Echos original offering of glass get mixed review. It looks like they are opening up a new line of heavy weight glass called BAG (bad a@@ glass). The specs show fast glass as opposed to med-f of the original line. Has anyone been to a show and held one these rods?

I have not handled one yet but plan on purchasing one in either an 8wt (as a backup) or 10wt (muskie/pike rod). I suspect they will be fast for glass and perform best when up-lined.

I liked the original Echo glass series and think they are really good for the price. I thought the "big water" series was pretty good too but the rods were underweighted (need the next line size up to see their full potential) and needed more appropriately sized grips. The glass switch rods in 3 and 4wt are excellent!

I haven't handled one but am interested, particularly in the 9 and 10wt models. I like the length of the rods (9') in theory but wonder how they will cast. I have never cast an Echo rod, though. This is one I will sit on for awhile and see what people think of them.

I don't particularly like rods in the higher line weights that are 9' long. Their swing weight is against them, even in CF rods. If these rods are 9' long, they are not my BAG.

Cheers,
Graeme

I think that's my biggest concern as well...of course, I'll still probably end up with the 12, just 'cause.

I agree, swing weight is the killer of heavier lineclass, longer rods. That is why I like the Epic Bandit so much, and the Boca, my favorite Tarpon rod. I think the 9 foot length of the Echos may be simply a result of marketing "necessity" - Maybe hard for new graphite to glass converts to understand that you can actually cast and fish a heavier lineclass sub 9 foot rod very well...Personally would have loved the 12 wt rod in an 8 foot one piece construction.....

Or maybe Tim has made these very light and very fast for the length. I really look forward to try one!

I like a 9 ft rod in glass. Especially in the lighter configurations the new glass rods of today. For me, it gives me more clearance when wading on the saltwater. My Seele 10 plus is my do all in Saltwater and doubles as a large mouth bass bug rod in colder months.

I have used and own 2 of Echo's glass switch rods in weight 3 and 6 and they don't feel overly uncomfortable for a days fishing, nor do they feel all that slow either, just full working. They put out a ton of line when I do things right too.

I'm very excited about these rods, myself. I've been looking at various bigger glass rods, and I am a fan of Echo. The 8 might find a home with me.

Their BAG 9 foot 8 weight is a 5.7 oz. rod, which is pretty darn hefty for an 8 weight.

That does seem hefty. My FF85 is under 4 oz, I think. I realize the components used make a difference, but what do some of the current 8wt rods approaching 9 ft weigh? Epic 888?

I sold my Epic 888, but I seem to recall that the as built rod weighed 5.4 ounces. Obviously different builds will have different weights based on the actual components, but I suspect that most are around that weight. I also had a 990 and it also weighed 5.4 ounces.

Out of curiousity, does anyone know how much graphite Echo is using in these? It's a major component of their switch and spey "glass"...no secrets there.

I had actually emailed them about it (with the switch/spey rods) and was told straight from the horse's mouth that there is no graphite in those blanks. I would have no reason to expect anything different with the BAG series.

That's interesting. Not to get into a he said/he said war of attrition but in a conversation with Mr. Rajeff himself there was mention of significant carbon content in those rods, and even absent that knowledge, the tube diameter and wall thickness of their switch and spey rods couldn't be achieved with glass alone. Ask anyone who rolls fiberglass - it just can't be done.

They're in the business of selling rods and there is no legal compulsion for them to divulge composition of their stuff. I don't have a bone to pick with them but do think some honesty in the business would go a long way.

That's what prompted my email to them. It wasn't Tim who responded, but I believe Jaime?...I'd have to dig it out and take a look at it.

regardless, I absolutely love the TH glass (not a fan of the SH that they put out) and can't wait to get my hands on one of these BAG rods.

That's ultimately what matters - the material is "immaterial" as long as you're having fun!

I've been looking at getting the new Echo BAG in the 9' 8wt, but am a little fresh to glass rods. I fish an old Fenwick Feralite 5wt so I have experience with it, would you guys recommend I start with the Echo BAG to get used to heavy line glass rods or would you propose a different rod?

The Echo BAG in 9' 8 weight is a 5.7 oz rod, which to me is too heavy. I would look at something else in glass or graphite. An old, medium action graphite rod like a Fenwick HMG 908 weighs 3.25oz and can be had pretty cheaply. In glass, Fenwick FF858 or FF85, although 8'6", are light, inexpensive, and both will cast 8 weight lines.

It does seem heavy, but I'm going to hold off judgement until I can get my hands on one and cast it for myself. My Bandit build ended up at 5.5 oz, which was surprising after casting it all day (not exactly apples to apples by any stretch). Still can't wait to get my hands on a couple.
