great for distance, not so great for handling (or stripping)...I'm sure I'll eventually find that happy medium...

That is absolutely perfect! Probably about the way I'd describe the few I've used...

That's an interesting topic. I have some small forest streams in my area, but conditions are tough for fly casting and often require to roll cast .
These rivers and streams are small and overgrown, and casting distance is usually very short (no longer than 3-4 rod length)
so i'm thinking to get Ambush or OPST in very small grain weight (160-175) to throw it with 3-4 class typical "small stream" rod

I did some playing with this this summer - I love my commando heads, but I find the 150gr too heavy and clunky for even my 4/5wt glass rod, and it was waaay too much for the 3wt I had.

However... here’s a secret! Before you go drop $60 on a 150gr head, try using a Rio floating MOW tip as a skagit head. They’re 10ft, 120gr and will turn over polyleaders or the new OPST floating tips. Probably would work with the OPST micro sink tips as well. And they’re $20. I expect the regular Rio tips would work well too for more of a scandi taper.

Is 150 grain on 4wt rod sufficient to turnover these buggers?
They are on 5/32 tungsten beadheads. I never use anything bigger in small streams

If you keep the tip short, yes I think so.

Should be. I had success with a 175 grain tossing heavier flies last weekend using homemade tips cut from old fly lines. Best combo for heavier streamers & wets was a 3 foot long tip cut frim the front end of a DT 7 F line, which I whipped loops into the ends of. Coupled with a 6 foot long leader made up of a 15lb butt and 10lb tippet.

Your flies are smaller and lighter - don't see why the 150 would not work.
