Can somebody tell me why a Gene Anderegg built rod from 1953 is pulling down a $200 plus bid on EBay right now? Yeah, its a nice example of early tobacco glass with all the right parts and its an 8 footer, but really... Who was he?

A little web searching reveals he was one of the founding members of the Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers, was first 4 year president of FFF, and was a national champion fly caster at an early age.

Can kinda see it as it is near perfect condition, has nice sock and beautiful tube, has some history to it, and it's just a really good looking rod. I'm too cheap to go that high but don't blame anyone for bidding on it, it's not like there are thousands out there.

Oops. Heads-up posts are usually more direct in praising or running down an auction item with an effect of influencing the outcome or the outcome of a similar item for buyer or seller, depending on what's said.

I didn't perceive this one in that way--and I'm about certain it wasn't so-intended--but was simply out of curiosity about the rod and the name, and thus relevant to the Collecting section. Sometimes we can discuss relevant auctions with out any intent to influence them--but that could still happen.

I only thought once reading the discussion and didn't make any changes, but we could think twice when mentioning an open auction. If in doubt as to whether it will have a heads-up effect, best to wait until the auction closes and then make, essentially, the same curiousity post with reference to a recently completed auction.

Well, thanks to everybody. I'll try Google first next time but it is a rod worth viewing.

since it's already at top - every time this thread gets topped, we give it more exposure.
I think the moderator should lock it to keep people from topping it.
Clearly one of our members is actively interested in purchasing the rod. I don't think he should be pushed into a bidding war by exposure that violates the intent of no heads-up rule.
