Can anyone remember what Orvis's top of the line rod and reel was in the late '80's?

In the summer of 1989 I bought the absolute top of the line rod and reel that Orvis had to offer. All I can remember was it was an 8' 6" 6 weight, 4 piece rod, with a fighting butt, and the total cost of the rod, 2 fully spooled reels, and case was $1172. The rod broke at the 3rd ferrule the second time it was used, I sent it back for repairs and was never seen again. Any ideas what it might have been? I've even called their head office in Manchester, but no one in customer service could recall what the top of the line model was then.

Those days were what they later called the Superfine series and the Western series.
I think it was a Western series rod.

I believe it was the Triton, named after the submarine - about the time I was ordering custom Fishers from Mound House and never looked back.

Bingo! I pulled up some pix of the Trident on google, that's it! I've never been clear if mine was lost in the mail when I sent it back for repair, or if Orvis lost it. Either way it's long gone, and I ended up replacing it with something a lot more affordable. An Advantage 2 that caught everything from brook trout to tarpon for 25 years and now is my sons pike rod.

Thanks for the help! :)

Ha! I still remember those Orvis Trident TL magazine advertisements featuring Ohio-class submarines.
