My first fly rod was an FS Voyageur that a family friend gave me when I was 13 or 14 (1981). That rod went on many adventures with me in growing up in Juneau only to be a casualty of one of our moves. I replaced that rod with a graphite fly rod but I always missed hat Fenwick. Over the years I've loosely looked for its replacement, but the models I came across were to thrashed. A week or so ago I was reading through a thread here and a poster said in a response about buying rods, and they essentially said quit messing around and buy it, if you don't like it you can get most of the $$$ back, life is too short! At almost 50 it hit me hard and I knew then I would seek out and buy one ASAP!!
I took delivery of a F/NF FF75-4 yesterday and today paired it with an Abel TR2 with 406 dt5 and spent an hour or so casting in the yard out to 45' or so. What a rod, it's nothing like what I expected. Flat out smooth with a great feel, power was abundant when I leaned into it with the wind which was unexpected from some reports I've read. Lovely rod and I'm glad I took the posters advice.
Thanks to all here, you make this forum awesome!!

That was my first Fenwick, and I was not expecting such a great rod. I took it down to the dock and cast it with a 5 wt---great feel. Then a six wt--maybe even better. I went back and got a 7 wt---still worked very well. A convenient pack rod that does everything you could throw at it. I proceeded to buy five more Fenwicks.

PS Postimage has been a great replacement for Photobucket, but the thumbnails come with all sorts of ads. Better to use "hotlink for forums" Not nearly as hot as the thumbnails.
here's what I see off to the side when I click the photos:

Newfydog,
I went in and changed pics to the forum, which I usually use, I think I clicked on 15" monitor?? Hope this doesn't have the pop ups.

I can see how you ended up with five Fenwicks! I picked up an ff857 last week and really like it for a heavy, but this ff75-4 has left me wanting add more of the four piece Fenwick travel rods! Do you have any thoughts on one or two I should look at? I wouldn't mind putting together a collection of three or four Voyageurs in various weights.
Thanks

706/4 - very nice short 5/6 wt
756/4 - very close to 75/4 but a bit more powerful, sweeter than the two piece but a bit less of a cannon
80/4 - almost parabolic 6wt, very different from most other Fenwicks - will cast a 5 decently
70/4 - again almost parabolic - can handle 4, 5 and 6wt lines.

I have the 756-4, one of my favorite rods for sure. It is very similar to the FF75-4 but I like the grip, the action, the reels seat, the stripping guide on the 756 just a bit more.

I love my 806, and would like an 806-4, but they are rare.
I had an 856-5, nice rod, compact and a rocket, just too heavy for my forearm tendonitis.

Cool, the ff70-4,ff706-4, and ff806-4 intrigue me as they would fit nicely around the ff75-4. Is there that much difference between the actions Between the models? I'd like an action similar to the ff75-4 or ff756-4.

Big difference between the 706/4 and 70/4. The first is a medium fast progressive, the second is a slow almost parabolic action. Personally I prefer the 706 and it's closer to the 75/4.

I have the FF756-4, FF75-4, and FF806-4 and all have the same sweet progressive actions. Of course the FF806-4 is a much stronger rod - big trout water and streamers, but can also do a #18 dry fly if need be. Also a great bass stick.

Thanks for your opinions, much appreciated!
That narrows it down to the 706 and 806, should make for a very nice trifecta of Voyageurs. It'll also give me something to do this winter, hunt for more fly rods!

Great pics Doug, we know it'll work on good size, chunky trout...... Beauties!!

I was looking at the ff85-3 as well....... Will have to see what's out there for the right$$.
JASTrout, I've looked at that exact rod a number of times, it's a beaut, problem is it's at exactly trice what my cap for a Fenwick is, maybe I'm off value wise, but for me right now I'm thinking $150 is a good cap to stick to.......
