I found this 3 piece 8 1/2 foot Phillipson. It is marked P86F and looks unused. It has what I have seen described as the "Hammer Handle" shaped grip...hard to see in the pics, but it is elliptical and shaped like a hammer handle, not round. As you can see in the pics it is very clean. The seller said that it was a 6 weight. He stated that the F in the model number indicated that is was fly/fly weight. There is no other printing or script on the rod. This rod feels like my Fenwick FF86, the Phillipson seems just a little slower and smoother.

Any info on age or thought on this rod are welcomed. I plan to get it to Ricks Rods next week to see what info he might have. Thanks

Scott

The bright minds on this forum told me the 5 wt rod shown below was from the early 1950's. Your find is in great shape.

Grouse that is a beautiful rod. I love the old Phillipson glass. How does that one fish? How is it marked?

Only fished this vintage rod for a brief period before it was sold to pursue another fly rod. Surprised at how well this five weight rod worked. Enjoyed the classic look of the blank. It also had the hammer handle cork grip which is not my favorite style yet felt quite natural if you have spent any time with tools. Good memory of landing a nice 10" brook trout on the first outing with this rod.

An early Phillipson, somewhat slow tobacco glass blank. The model number is the length designation.

I still haven't had a chance to get this rod to Rick at Rick's Rods. I will try to get there before the end of the week...I'll post what I find out from him.
