Thanks for looking for an answer Barry!

My question or concern was more to the drag system in the SA System reels.

It seems there are two, a "Marquis" dual click and pawl type, and a "Viscount" circular ring type.

I gather the circular style was the first and came out in the early 70's, and the click and pawl came out apx 10 years or so later.

I was curious about how favorable the circular style might be, or not, and if one was preferable over the other, or not. ;-)

They are merely different and function just right the both of them.

I think the thread linked below addresses what you were asking about.

Right, yep that's what I was referring to, spot on.

I am a new guy to this glass and vintage stuff so am erring on the overly aware side of things, lol.

The circular drag set up seemed to work for them for a long time, I am sure it will work for me just fine. ;-)

Thanks for the link.

And thanks again Barry for putting it out here.

Glad it helped. I'm also fairly new to the glass/vintage gear arena and recalled finding that thread a few months back when I was looking into a SA System reel.

I'm sure that the Hardy made System reels are fine. Sorry to muddy the run, but there's more than two models of System reels that are good. I'm a fan of the Daiwa made System 1 myself. If you're the looking at SA reels you might as well consider them too. System 1, 456 is a winner and the spools are interchangeable with the Daiwa 706. It has dual pawls like the Hardy Lightweights and I prefer that over the Marquis or Viscount (rhymes with discount ).

Daiwa 706/708 just about the best deal on the market

Back to original question. Any idea when System Rods and Reels were marketed?

Thanks--Barry

Reels look like from 1968 until current (you can still buy a system 4 reel today).

Thanks,

I'm talking about System reels made by Hardy that mirrored their Marquis.

and

The fiberglass System rods made on I believe Fisher blanks.

Thanks--Barry

I have a dual click/pawl System 8 reel that has the original box and papers, dated 1978. I suspect (but have no proof) that 1978 was towards the end of things as far as the Hardy made reels go.

I'm going to vote late 70s also - Scientific Anglers had a lot of free informational publications in fly shop magazine racks then.

I bought my dual click and pawl Hardy badged System 9 in early 1979. I was living in Islamorada and needed a reel for bonefish and small tarpon, rather noisy but it fit the bill perfect at the time.

About 1970. It was a marketing strategy--no brainer gear matching--for the growing fly-fishing industry, built on the industry effort of the mid 1960s to standardize line ratings by numbers corresponding to their weight in grains (still around today, but much strayed from). High quality reels and the great System fiberglass rods. Buy one each of those and an SA line, all the same numerical designation, and a new angler was in business. Soon after the first system graphite rods came out, (about 1977) SA gradually abandoned the system numbers as an indication of reel sizing/ optimum line and backing capacity for a given line weight. "System" # sort of rang that bell, but the numbers were more of a model or generation indicator.
