A little different from other favorite threads. Pick what you think is the top rod from each maker. Please refrain from listing more than one as this would defeat the purpose, I know it will be difficult for some of you. This should be fun and interesting given the abundance of glass both past and present. Also I will provide a starting list that others with more knowledge can add to based on their knowledge.

I'll play, of course as usual, based on what I either own or have cast--no bias there, right? ;) ...or is this thread a chance for everyone to show off how many rods they've cast/own...hmmm.

Steffen: 8' 5/6
Blue Halo: Gen1 8' 5/6 (this could actually pass for a 7wt...love it though)
Lamiglas: 7'6" 4wt 2pc
Fenwick: FF807
Conolon: (haven't found one I like, they all have sucked--all have been 7-8wts)
Cabelas: 6'6" wt CGR
Echo: 7'4" 4wt (only one of the series I've cast, and it was ok so it wins by default)
Fisher: 8'6" 6/7wt (love love love this rod, but it's also the only Fisher I've cast)
Shakespeare: 7'9" 1290
Eagle Claw: 7'6" 5/6wt. under-rated, but still not that great.
Heddon: I have an 8' 6wt that I like a lot and an 8'6" 8wt that I don't like at all.

There's my list. Even though I could only pick one Steffen, if I had to pick my two favorites out of everything, it would be both of my Steffens...

Cheers,
Randy

Here are some of my favorites:

Scott: F2 "Japan Special" 3wt. 7'2" 4pc.
Barclay: I really like his 4wt. 7'8" 3pc., but his new "special edition" rods are looking AMAZING!
McFarland: 5wt. 7'2" 3pc. (yellow glass); 5wt. 8'0" 3pc. (sanded brown glass); and 4wt. 8'8" 3pc. (black s-glass)
Seele: I love his "trico" 3wt. 7'6" 3pc.
Steffen: Probably the deepest lineup of awesome rods (in my opinion). But his 5/6wt. 8'0" and 2/3wt. 6'0" stand out to me.
Kenney: I have a very special 7'4" 5/6wt. 2pc. that is my favorite Kenney. But I also really like the 7'3" 3wt. 3pc.
Kabuto: My favorite is the 3wt. 6'6" 3pc. over-lined with a 4wt. line.
Lamiglas: The 6'6" 3/4wt. 6pc. is a very versatile rod handling 3wt., 4wt. and 5wt. lines nicely.
Orvis: I liked the 8'0" 5wt. 3pc.
Morgan: I have only handles four models, but the 6'9" 3wt. Japan Light model was amazing and my favorite!

Ha. If I had to choose one Steffen it would be the 5/6wt. 8'0". And if I had to pick one McFarland it would be the 8'8" 4wt I guess. And if I had to pick one Kenney it would be the special edition 5/6wt. 7'4" 2pc.

I have similar tastes in Mcfarland and Kenney camps. But will add a very special Mcfarland 7' 2" 4 semiparabolic earlier maroon color bank. Two rods not mention both 7'10" 5's: Paddock 's The One. Very versatile all around and CBarclay .

Steffen 7'9" 3 section 3/4 wt

Garcia Conolon Lee Wulff 5'6" 1 section 5/6 wt

Phillipson 3M Epoxite Registered EF66 2 section 4wt

Heddon 8381 7' 2 section 5wt

Shakespeare 1245 Panfish Special 7' 2 section 4wt

Fenwick FF79 8' 2 section 5/6wt

Can't say these are truly the top rods but they are ones I own or have owned
and they are all great fly rods.

I don't own very many glass rods, but of those I do, here are the ones I like:

Sceptre 765
Morgan TMR 804
Winston Stalker 864
DiamondGlass 864

Seems that I like long 4 weights.

Actionglas - 4576 7'6" hexagonal (very rare rod, should have kept it as a collectible; gorgeous cane paint job with beautiful wraps on a hexagonal shaft). The 8 footers get heavy.
Berkley - Para/Metric 8'0" 6/3, 8ft is the sweet spot in Berkley PM's whether you want 2pc or 3pc (look for the straight gripped ones with medallion on the grip). One of the very best values on the used market when they come up for sale.
Conolon - Lee Wulff 2073 7'6" 6/2, I think the Wulffs liked the 7'6" best too. If you like parametrics, try the Ritz 7'10" 2062 which was very nice
Cortland - Leon Chandler 7'6"/2, Fisher blanked rod, otherwise the fiberglass ferruled ProCrest 7'6" 5/2 is not at all bad
Diamondglass - 8'6" 4/3, would much rather have the McFarland 8'8" 4/3 but nice rod nonetheless
Eagle Claw - Don't like any rod with butt over tip. Only saving grace for this lineup is price.
Echo - they all stink but I guess I'll pick the 7'10" 5/3, Echo has some nice casting, fishable graphite. They could have done better R&D for this glass line up. I expect much better from them.
Epic - 8'0" 4/3, nice if you like really fast glass. Nice but expensive blanks.
Fenwick - FF70/4 - 7'0"6/4, There are other nice casting Fenwicks obviously, but this very sweet small stream rod that does it all is amazing for what it does in 4 pieces in a short rod.
Hardy - JET 8'0" 6/3, rare 3 piece JET but snatch it up if you find one. Most JETs have too few guides
Heddon - PAL 7''6" 5-6/2, they cast beautifully but delaminate easily. Higher grade Heddon's have some gorgeous or even gaudy cosmetics but don't cast any better than this basic model.
Kabuto - 7'6" 4/3 (actually a 5 and really like it as a 5). Kabuto consistently rates his rods too low in line weight. I finally bought one for myself but asked him to put 4/5 on the 7'6" 4/3
Lamiglas - 7'0"3/2, one of the best values on the market. This is a true 3 wt but with more pieces this rod becomes a 4wt.
Larry Kenney - 8'1" 3/3 but you can't go wrong with any of the 3's or 4's. The master of E-glass
McFarland - 8'8" 4wt Black S glass, his best taper. I never cared for his earlier offereings. But his range is getting better now that he is rolling his own and being with Seele Zeitlos but this rod is still the top dog. It might be the best glass rod ever made over 8 foot.
Orvis - Superfine Glass 8'0"5/3, if you like a fast rod, this one does it very well.
Phillipson - 7.5 foot is the Phillipson sweet spot and 7'6" 5/2 EF76, the spigot ferruled one, is the best of those
Redington - 8'0" 5/3, a fair amount better than the Echo crap. But all of the short Redington's and Echo's leave much to be desired.
Sage - SFL 7'9" 6/3, a very fast boomstick, great night or hex fishing rod for trout.
Scott - this one is really tough but I'll pick the F70-4/3 7'0" 4/3 in the yellow or brown glass. Cherry picked over decades, this range of glass is one of the most complete. I had a hard time deciding between this and the F79 for best though.
Shakespeare - 1289 7'3" 5/6wt, There are actually better Shakespeare's. It's a huge range. But this short balsa core rod is surprisingly good for a 1950's rod.
Silaflex - 322980, one of the best classic 8 foot 7 wts. The 322xxx offerings are all pretty decent though.
Southbend - Payne by SouthBend 8'0 5/2.
Steffen Brothers - also very tough but will go with the 8' 4/5 wt. Steffen is the king of 8 footers but every rod he builds is very fishable. Others have picked the 8' 5/6 but I'll pick the 4/5 as the standout. If I had to pick one trout rod, this would be it. I like the higher line weight rating on almost all Steffen rods. If he'd have someone else sign his rods, Mark would sell more finished rods.
SA System (Fisher) - 8'8" 8wt. Nice little line of rods. Appropriate number of guides on this line of Fisher blanked rods compared to Hardy's.
Thomas and Thomas - I really didn't care for the 8 footers but the 7'6" 4wt was super with a 5 wt line, very tippy dry fly action
Tom Morgan - this is also tough but grrrr, I bought the 7'6" 4/2. Gorgeous cosmetics and world class fishability in the same rod. The best rod designer overall in cane, graphite, and fiberglass
Russ Peak - The 7'6" to 8'0" rods, kept a 7'10" 5/2. Now surpassed by modern manufacturers of fiberglass in fishability but not in cosmetics.
Vince Cummings - 6'8" Ultimate 1.
Winston - 7'6" 6/2 San Francisco Rod. Very nice line of rods throughout. I won 2nd place at this year's fiberglass casting championship behind Mike McFarland using this rod.
Mario Wojnicki - haven't warmed up to his trout weights but I test cast a heavier 7wt one at MichiGlass I thought would be great for smallmouth fishing, can't remember the number but don't think it's in his regular mix.

Wow Crusty! Oops forgot Redington, thx. Figured you would have went with the Orvis Golden Eagle although technically it is Phillipson.

Here's my favorites from the rods I have fished extensively with. I have cast many others that really stand out. I really liked the Barclay 3wt, Ijuin 3wt, and Duff's Kabuto 7'6" 4wt.

Fenwick: FF806
Steffen: His 7'9" 3/4 in 3pc
TL Johnson: 7'6" 4wt
Morgan: 8'3" 6wt
James Green: 7'9" 5wt 3pc. Actually my favorite rod that I own or have ever owned.

The only series I have cast enough rods to judge are the these with my favorites listed. Of course this is just imho

T&T Heirlooms: the 8' 4wt
Fenwicks: 315 older series 7' 5wt 2/1
Cortland Leon Chandler: 7'6" 4/5wt
Phillipson: epoxite 7' 5/6wt
Scott F2: 6'6" 3wt.
Scott F1: 7'6" 4wt

I at some point or another owned or cast most of the rods if not all from these series. The Fenwicks I still have a long way to go, but the 315 is a dream rod.

Can't comment on many others, but I add a vote for Fenwick's FF 70-4. Just like another user said, the 70-4 'does it all' (at least as far as small-stream work); handling lines from 4 to 6.

I cannot vote for "top rod" for any company/maker because (like probably nearly everyone else) I have not cast EVERY rod from any company/maker. But I'll play based on my still limited experience with a few companies/makers whose work I have fairly broad experience with:

Steffen --> 8'0" 5/6 (though ALL of his rods are very very close in feel and quality to this model)
Wojnicki --> 227P4 (7'5" 4wt)
Scott F -->652/3 (with a 3wt line)
McFarland --> 8'3" 4wt S-Glass

The Golden Eagles were better cosmetically but the new Superfine Glass blanks are made by Orvis. The whole series performs well as did most Phillipsons,

I haven't cast all the rods in each series though I have cast the entire series for a number of them. It's very difficult to cast an entire series, especially series out of circulation. For instance, I can't imagine anybody out there who has cast an entire series of Shakespeares, though there may be a few who have come close. I didn't comment on Wanigas because I haven't cast enough of them to know very well, 4 that I can remember. A 7 1/2 foot AuSable that I had at one time was outstanding but it was a Phillipson, maybe modified. I have also cast a smattering of Barclay's, Shane Gray's, Claudio's, etc. but not enough to claim a favorite. I did comment on best of series if I've cast a fair representation of rods, or a representation that I got a good feel for the maker's style. If there is a better one than the one I chose that I haven't cast, I'd surely like to know about it and will do my best to find one in the future. Some rod series I didn't comment on at all. For instance, I didn't comment on Wright McGills or H-I's. They never really interested me enough to cast a bunch of them or the ones I cast never stood out.

Having made my evaluations on "best of series" one needs to keep in mind that it is practically impossible to fish an entire series of rods, let alone cast an entire series. And it's almost impossible to cast an entire series at one time although I've done that for some of the smaller series. It's also difficult to cast a lot of them in comparison to other rods at one time, side by side. Side by side comparisons reveal a lot. My memory of fishability and castability has not been as good as my memory of good dishes I've eaten over the years, but it's been pretty good. But the point is that one has to rely on one's memory, and for me that's getting pretty shoddy these days. So take my findings with a grain of salt.

Fun!

This is another of those threads that makes me realize I haven't cast nearly enough rods! Especially the new stuff. All these are based only on the makers' rods of which I have cast more than one model. Otherwise, there can be no comparison, right?

Cabelas - Withholding comment until I cast some of the re-issued CGRs. I would hope that the worst of these will be better than the best of the CGTs that I cast...
Ferdinand Claudio - Wish I could comment!
Eagle Claw - The new 7' 5/6 weight
Echo - 7' 4" 4-weight
Fenwick - Ooh, tough choice. Just for all-around utility, I'll say my FF-806.
Hardy - 7 1/2' 4 weight - the most recent edition. I think they have some graphite in 'em?
Heddon - I want to say the 7 1/2' 0 3/4 F Featherweights, but I assume we're just talking about glass here, so I'd have to vote for my 7 1/2' #75 Black Beauty, which is also one of the most beautiful production fly rods ever made, in my opinion.
Orvis - The new Superfine 7 1/2' 4 weight
Phillipson - I've cast a few, but the only one I owned was an 8' 7 weight 400-series (Eponite). I think others are more qualified to give an opinion. It was a pretty cool rod.
Redington - Meh...
Scott - F2 703/3
Shakespeare - 7' 9" Presidential. So much fun and super cool retro funk...
Silaflex - 8' 6 weight (I know, I know...). Don't remember the exact model number.
Winston - I cast the Early 00s glass series (world cup?). I thought the 8' 5 weight was nice. I admit complete ignorance of their classic glass line-up. Need to correct that...

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all,

Nick

My collection focused on trying to find the "best" rod in trout lengths and weights from each manufacturer. I see many of our friends above feel the same way I do about several fine rods. My list includes rods that I kept in my pursuit of the goal stated above.

Phillipson (registered) EE76 7'6" 5/6 wt (as good as they come, now expensive)
Garcia Conolon S636 7'3" 6 wt (but only get one if you like sloooow rods, great for panfish)
Cortland ProCrest 7'6" 5/6
Shakespeare Dr Howald Purist 7'6" 6 wt (very hard to find) so...
Shakespeare FY A-250 8' 5 wt (only series they made with glass ferrules, also made 7'9" 6 wt)
Lamiglas FFT 764 7'6" 4wt (my favorite rod)
Hardy Tarantino 7' 5 wt
LLBean Featherweight 6'6" 5/6 wt (in standman's list, most do not know about the very light vintage rod by phillipson)
Browning Silaflex 222970 7' for 5 wt (very elegant rod)
Browning 022975 7'6" 6 wt (S glass)
Pflueger Supreme 7'6" 6 wt by Shakespeare, nicely finished
Fenwick FF 79 8' 6 wt (but I had a hard time choosing between FF75, FF70, and FF79)
Actionrod Stallion 7'6" 8 wt (great short, heavy fly rod, good for kayaks and salt)

I have none of the new stuff but from what I see here, I might have to get a Steffen 8' 5/6 wt.
