Thought I'd share some pics from an afternoon on the river last spring.

Mostly blue skies but the odd shower to spice things up:

This section fishes well when the water's not too low.

The Yomogi 7'11" that I built last winter is a lot of fun on this water.

There are trout, grayling, chub, barbel in this river.

First time I post using dropbox - I can see the pics inside the forum post - let me know if you can't.

Nice small rivers!
I heard there's a lot of big Barbels in Belgium, which are good to catch on fly

The barbels I have seen in this river are pretty small - 12"-14", maybe they will grow up someday. I have caught them on hare's ear nymphs but the weapon of choice is the worm fly.

On the other hand I have hooked into some pretty big chubs, once getting into a pair simultaneously on a sedgehog and caddis pupa. The bigger one was 18", the smaller 15". This happened miles upstream of the area in the photos where the stream is maybe just 10' wide. Chubs are normally very hard to entice but a beaver had just gone through the pool three seconds before and that must have made them lose their wits. Not much chance of that situation repeating itself.

In case you are wondering beavers have been reintroduced in Europe just very recently and with no natural enemies they are flourishing, perhaps excessively. I find it somewhat ironic that having spent 20 years in Canada I have now seen way more beavers in Belgium in just the last couple of years.

Nice looking river, it has a similar appearance to my home water, the Battenkill.

Speaking of reintroduced species, Bald Eagles were absent from my area up until about 20 years ago, when they first started showing up, they were on the bigger lakes and rivers, as they had families, they spread out to the smaller rivers, like the Battenkill. One section on that river where we used to catch rather large Browns on dries, it was a paradise for about 4 to 5 years, not a lot of fish, but big ones that would be on the surface eating quite regularly, then a pair of Eagles showed up, now it is rare to see or catch any trout in this section. With the food gone, the pair of Eagles has moved out. Its our national bird, but at the same time a double edged sword.

Yes, indeed. Raptors are a main predator of fish, and very possibly the reason why a trout can see upward so well. It isn't just us -- we're a recent threat, relatively.

I was at a Trout Unlimited meeting just last evening, where it was noted that many trout in the shallow "Dream Stream" here in Colorado bear talon marks.

We have a few Heron on this river but many rivers in Europe are plagued by cormorants. The fish are almost always found where there is tree cover. No eagles - yet. They say the wolf is coming back - perhaps they'll take care of the beaver overpopulation....

What a lovely piece of water. Looks like the water levels there are doing alright unlike here where the rivers are very low.

Nice browns as well. I really like those red spots showing up brilliantly.

Water levels have been pretty low since the end of July. That's not unusual for August but by mid September we normally have more water. Fish pics are recent but pics of river are from late last spring. Last day of season is tomorow.....
