Harassed by a Drone

Oregon has already banned the use of drones fishing. I wonder if it is legal to fish for drones?

I wandered up to my urban fishing spot today, and a drone went buzzing by. It zipped down river, then went up high and hovered. A mild irritation, but no big deal. I couldn't see anyone operating it, but upstream is a whitewater park, and cool people like Gerry Lopez surf there. They seem to come with an entourage, cinematographers etc.

Then the damned came down, rotated its camera towards me, and floated there, like some buzzing cyclops staring at me. I finally tossed a cast up and out in its general direction, and actually came pretty close. It zipped the heck out of there. I could have had it. I was casting a line I got on ebay for like $25, I should have gone ahead and taken it down.

Oh well, it left, I caught some fish after that, and avoided a probable shouting match. That might have have been fun though, standing out there in fast, freezing water in my waders "hey, just come out here and get it"

Hmmmm, you seem to have discovered a new take on "fly" fishing........

I would have tried to take it down with a rock...rocks are much cheaper than fly lines. I can't stand drones.

Yeah, but with it taking video, it's much easier to take it down with a fly line and claim 'incidental contact' while you were casting. Even better if it lands in the river and floats away downstream, never to be seen again, and if it is found, I'm sure the water would do it no good. ;)

Throw a 'hopper at it. Then you can rename it the 'chopper 'hopper'! :lol

I had this exact same problem almost two years ago while fishing a concrete ditch for carp. I was working a pod of rising grassie’s when I got buzzed. Then it hovered over me and dropped down lower and spooked the carp. I started to cast at it and it zipped off. Damn things...

Could just shoot it down. Though that might cause some fireworks later.

I do sort of like the idea that rather than trolling around in a boat, a drone can carry a lure way out into a lake and drop it off, and you just troll it back. Of course, a sky full of drones and a lake full of long broken off lines would be the result. Might give the duck hunters something to do off season too.

Or that fish takes that $100+ drone and makes it a submarine :)

I understand the annoyance of drones, especially from the private sector. However, governmental agencies are enlisting drones for certain aspects of their work. As an example, when my wife's cousin went missing, the police used a drone for parts of their search. A drone is able to search over places where people on foot or horseback, or even dogs can easily get to. And helicopters and planes often cannot get low enough.

I think they should be required to offer drone photos of you fishing. Someone had one in the campsite next to us on the Colorado river near Arches. It was noisy and distracted us a bit from dinner, but it wasn't up for that long.

I thought about going over to ask if it was taking photos, because it would have been great to get some arial photos from that campground.

Maybe I'll take my wrist rocket along next time I go fishing.

I've had a similar experience, only it wasn't a drone it was a small helicopter. The guy was flying it in a fairly confined area behind me, which was kind of cool...And then he decided to fly it out over the river I was fishing...not cool.

If a drone takes pics or video of you, and the user puts it on the internet, would they need a release from you?

No. A photographer only needs a release if they use it for commercial purposes and you are recognizable.

.

They do this at yacht races. They take pics, post online in a terribly pixilated and then either contact you to know if you want to buy high resolution ones, or you contact them. Some of the pics are really cool. So people buy them. Who wouldn't want a poster of their sailboat in all her glory on a reach?

I don't go casting my lines around people flying drones, and I expect them not to fly their drones around my fishing. It's just being respectful for one another.

An acquaintance took one down with his 16 gauge Fox this autumn along a river bottom in the north central part of Montana. He said that they're not much sport.

High in iron but should limit consumption to one or two per month due to possible lead and mercury contamination.

You go get em Newfydog. Only make sure you have some backing and a stout drag.

Yoter, your friend has fine taste in double guns and steady aim.

I've never seen a drone while fishing, or any where else really. I'm kind of on the back side of beyond up here. The only one I've seen close up kept hovering around my house just after I adopted the kids. It was a little too close for comfort so I dusted it with a 12 gauge. No one complained, so obviously it shouldn't have been there in the first place.

I see them flying along the Delaware often. Never had one checking me out though.
