just so. For me it's a race against time and my bodily degeneration - there are hundreds of miles of CO streams up in the high country, 'underutilized' as the real estate brokers would say, 'gloriously underfished' to me. Getting there is usually a long hike over hard ground, keeps out the riffraff but not sure how long I'll be able to do it..

5.6 million in CO now, and 4.8 million just on the Front (st)Range.
Luckily WY is just up the road, and also has plenty of good country left. It'll last my lifetime, not that there's so much of that left..

wish I could make it out to Montana this year..

Same boat here, Doug. For me, it's a race against time to get retired and get some fishing in before my body betrays me, as it is already starting to do. Heel spurs, arthritic knees that will prolly one day need to be replaced, along with other maladies over the horizon, and a job that can bring injury fast enough, esp for someone my age.

I know that for those who live in MT/WY/CO and have lived there for a while, you see a degradation of the experience directly linked to the influx of more residents. And absolutely no doubt you are right. But I will say this: in comparison with much of the rest of the country, those three states still are a paradise on earth. (With a nod to hotdish's Wisconsin, where there appear to be trout a'plenty.)

We're still 4 monthes away from August, but I'm excited already!!! Been google-searchin' restaurants in *********! A man's gotta do his due diligence, esp when it comes to victuals!!! I already know where to eat in West Yellowstone! Thinkin' about pickin' up a wide-angle lens for my camera so I can take some landscapey type pictures. Not sure yet if I'm gonna make a run to Glacier or not. It's hard to cram enough of a good time into 2 1/2-3 weeks!!

Signed up for a one-day Orvis-endorsed fly fishing school. I go tomorrow. The two instructors are rock solid. I'm sure it'll be oriented towards saltwater flyfishing, but one thing is for sure...going isn't going to hurt anything.

I tried to arrange casting lessons with one of the guys teaching the school...he's an FFF certified instructor, but our schedules didn't mesh this month. I'll talk to him tomorrow and maybe we can match schedules before August.

And then I'm thinking I may get a refresher on casting at Blue Ribbon Flies before I drive over to ********* from the Madison campground.

Never heard of it, Hotdish, but seeing it's not stupid far away, and the Montana speed limit is generous, mebbeso I'll run over there after the clave.

BTW the one thing that you can always count on out here is the wind. Not your ordinary run of the mill wind but a knock you off your feet wind. I would suggest you bring at least one rod a line weight heavier than you'd normally think of, just in case. It starts off quiet in the morning but can turn into a real blow by afternoon.

Just a suggestion : )

Thanks! My Paddock 7wt, just finished, will definitely make the trip and see action, wind or no.

If that's the 8'3 7wt from Fred's newer series that's one heck of a rod!

What, say, if I obtained an Echo 9' 6 wt big water glass and stuck a 7 wt line on it? Would that suffice for a 'windy' rod?

Or should I set my sights on something different?

I'll just cast downwind. Easy enough...

It's the 8'6" Signature Series. I'm a couple weeks away from being able to fish it, and I'm eager.

The preparation continues....just scored an Umpqua Steamboat sling pack from fleabay for $90.

Tom406 or dustdog12, would you advise a 6 wt or 7 wt for the breezy rod?

Rods under consideration are an Echo B.A.G. Quickshot, an Echo Ion XL, and an Orvis Recon. I can get the Recon for 20% off. I was leaning towards a 7 on all rods due to reading that a 7 wt is advisable for some of the wind encountered out there.

Picked up an Orvis Recon in 7 wt today, but I'll grab a fiberglass 7 wt to bring to the 'Clave so that I don't get excommunicated or pilloried.

Hi Del,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. We were at the Carolina Clave. A 6 or 7 weight rod is fine. 7 weight rods get short shrift but are pretty versatile in most instances. Either one will be OK.

Afternoon winds will likely frustrate you out here, especially if you're on bigger water, and 7wt rods are the antidote. Imho classic 7wt's are extremely versatile in most instances.

I fish a 6wt a whole lot out here. I fish the 7 exclusively with streamers. August is hopper/attractor season.

Hi Dustdog12 or Anyone,

Can you post a couple of photos of your "go to" August hopper/attractor flies ... just so I can get going tying :)

Cheers, Stan (flyrod)

Here's a blog of countless hopper patterns from a pro tyer and ********* outfitter.

https://hopperfishing.wordpress.com/ I use the thunder thighs, morrish, and small chubbies (12-14) a lot. The old school non foam patterns work great here too and the fish see less of them.

Here's his store for supplies, everything you need for modern hopper patterns.

https://www.hopperfishing.com/pro-shop/

I am a hopper addict and force feed them to fish all the way through late September and early October.

Dusty

Dusty, which 6-weight rod do you fish most often? I assume it's either your own 8'6" model or 8'9" one. Do you prefer a 6-weight for hopper fishing in general, or is it just the wind?

I fish my 8’6” more. I use it for hoppers a lot but mostly as an all around trout rod and from my driftboat instead of graphite.
