Does this mean no Coulee Conclave, or is this in addition to that one?

Ryan,
I don't know if the west is ready for you! Just don't wear your skinny jeans or show off your "dude wipes"

It sounds like the ********* conclave is what is going to be held this year, but that is just my considered opinion Hardly a definitive answer.

Regarding the Coulee Conclave, I will not be able to host it in 2018 unfortunately. Just too much going on. I am planning a Carolina Conclave in late April though. I'm working those details out now.

I could be convinced to go to MT. Would need to involve a side trip to the Gros Ventre wilderness and Hoback area though.

Command Central is on board. I will be there unless something unforeseen happens (I do not have a good track record at the last 2 Coulee events) but I keep trying!!! Just please let me know where asap, as I'll need to find an RV park, and I here they fill up fast and far in advance. Really looking forward to Montana guys and gals.

John :D

Of course, I move within easy driving of the driftless.... I my have to attend. Those big rivers out west are rather intimidating to me. I have no idea where to start.

I will do my best to show up. I will probably be in the area the week before, to get full value of the long journey.

The smaller ones. A lot less chance of anyone else seeing your learning curve, which is pretty quick anyway.

It's Montana, .........Wherever it's wet there's trout. :)

It's really not intimidating. And not to mention sage brush really only gets knee high. Imho its a lot tougher to cast a line on your typical driftless stream where most things by summer are borderline growing above your head. It made sense to me while I was in Yellowstone... "why does everyone think the west is so great? Oh yeah... don't need to constantly check my back cast" lol

I have to echo this, we may have a lot of the famous big water but we have some of the best small stream fishing you’ll find.

I agree with hotdish. I really wish I could spend more time on bigger water. Small stream fishing is great, but there are days where my flies spend more time in the brush and trees than on the water. I might not be able to read a big river, but I'm pretty sure I'd at least get my fly wet consistently.

Re backcasts etc...

When I was a boy, I mostly fished the small water in Maine, and so dealt with thick alders. I would read "Outdoor Life" etc. and yearn to fish the wide-open gravel banks of the western streams depicted in those pages. Now that I live in the west, I know all that backcast space comes with a price: wind. As Gilda Radner used to say, "It's always something."

Looks like it will be a great gathering, maybe someone should warn the trout!
I am hoping to make it, pending scheduling of several other August events. Why do they all come at once?!

Thanks for all the responses thus far, we are looking forward to this event to say the very least. I will sometime, in the next couple of months, put together a guide to the area, including links to guiding (driftboats don't row themselves), food, and lodging.

Guessing most everyone will try to come longer than the clave dates and I will have tons of recommendations.

Dusty

I see a KOA about 8 miles south of town. Both tent sites and cabins to rent.

Dusty - would very much appreciate a listing of streams/rivers in the area. I have only fished YNP backcountry, Madison, Gallatin and Ruby(above the reservoir). More inclined to fish smaller streams while wading, so look forward to your list. If I come, probably would be staying in an RV Park in the area. Thanks in advance for your endeavors. Roy

With some help from Hellmtflies, have been looking at RV facilities in the area and have narrowed it down to two. It will likely be the ********* KOA since we are KOA members and get the discount and points. That leaves us 45 miles from Bozeman and 35 miles from the North entrance to YNP. My wife and I will be in the area for 10-11 days - Yellowstone - museums - fishing - mountains - heh, it's BIG SKY COUNTRY!
Can't wait for our first trip to the great State of Montana!
