Below are some photos of my new kenney 813. Gorgeous rod and fishes fantastic. Have had it out twice and have handled rainbows up to 24". Just an absolutely fantastic rod. Have fished with a peach wf3 wulff dt3 and a peach dt4. It handles all lines just beautifully. Hope the links to the pics work.

Hey Paul - a great looking rod. That must be a new color for Kenney. Roy

I'd like to see the while grip & seat area.

I often see a rod without the whole grip pictured. The grip is so essential to get an idea of the rod's cosmetics

Best 3 wght glass rod ! McFarland's 8'8"" 4 is my choice in that weight and five weights my list is many. Agreed Larry's rods are special and he is class act.

I've fished my 813 a lot more this past summer than in years past. The more I fish it the more I like it. I found I prefer it with a DT3. The new color looks great. Glad to hear you like your new rod.

I have one on the bench now, and it's a standout taper.

Absolutely agree with JASTrout. The Kenney 813 is probably the best long glass 3WT ever designed and the reason I sold my Steffen 8' 3/4. I wonder where Larry is sourcing his new brown blanks? It's certainly a beautiful blank, but I loved the original color too. I can never resist a photo opportunity so attached a photo of my 2010 edition along with my newly acquired favorite long graphite 3WT - had them out in the yard yesterday after reading Handsel's post. It would be hard to choose between them.

Blank is translucent. Absolutely love larry's rods (have several) and he is a great guy to deal with.

Jastrout

Looks like we like the same type of rods. I also have the McFarland 8'8" 4 wt and it gets the most use of any of my rods.

Anyone cast the Kenney side by side with the ********* 863?

I'm very impressed by the ********* 863. Definitely need to cast the Kenney one day.

Can anyone compare the action of this 813 with his 794? I'm guessing that due to the limitations of the glass, the longer, lower line wt. 813 is going to be a more full flexing and slower action. I own the 794 and like it a lot but haven't cast the 813. I don't fish a 3wt often except for small stream brookies and usually I use a shorter rod for that due to short casts and limited casting room. My one longer 3wt that's one of my favorites is, like Duff's, a Winston: BIIx 8'6" 3wt

The 813 is a true 3 wt but is still authoritative for a 3 wt. The taper is keenly engineered to have a very progressive feel. The 794 is superb too. It is a very delicate 4 wt and a bit softer in the midsection. It’s not quite as progressive as the 813 but I’d give the accuracy edge to the 794.

Pretty much second Crusty's opinion regarding action. The 813 is by no means slow but it does seem more deliberate than the 794 in the sense that it feels like you are throwing more rod around. The 813 feels at least as powerful as the 794 and I suspect it would throw a 4wt line further than the 794 - not to say that's a meaningful exercise. Both rods are ruthless when it comes to keeping fish on the hook. While I find myself fishing the 794 in incredibly tight spots the 813 feels more suited to less confined spaces. I keep promising myself to spend time swinging spiders with it because it seems like it would be great for that but it's not something I do very often and I haven't gotten around to it. I've only used it for upstream nymphing (size 16 and smaller beadheads) and dries and it's great for that.

Crusty & giogio -- Hmm. That's interesting, not quite what I expected to hear. It sounds like the 813 has a slightly stouter mid and slightly softer tip section to load better with the lighter line. It's hard to describe actions with words!

Tiptop - that's right, I just miked the two rods and the tip on the 813 is roughly 10% thinner than than the 794 while measuring the middle of the midsection the 813 is roughly 5% thicker than that of the 794. My 794 is older than my 813 and made of different material so comparisons are of limited value - but you still get an idea regarding taper differences.

That about sums it up, tip-top, but don’t take it as one being better than the other, just different. They are both exceedingly nice tapers and are true to their rating. Giorgio also makes an extremely interesting point about light Kenney tapers. All of the Kenney rods 3 to 5 wt I’ve tried are very sensitive to every move a fish makes. As long as you do your part, you won’t lose a fish.

I ordered the 813 because I wanted a rod I could fish in long shallow runs. I wanted it to be able to throw a long leader for tricos, midges, paraleps and olives. It's good at fishing soft hackles; small nymphs and larvae as well. I also have a CTS Quartz 763 that's really nice. I know you can get them as an 8'. Does anyone have one?

My favorite soft hackle rod is McFarland’s 8’8” 4wt 3pc because of the extra length for mending and its capability to protect a tippet but the Kenney 813 would be a very nice close second.
